Alan Derwin [Pintura / Painting]

As may have noticed those who visit the blog regularly, expressionist artists counted among my favorites. The Expressionism, severely punished in its time by the rise of Nazism and banned as "degenerate art", has an uncommon strength by intense psychological insight and critical load of their subjects, spontaneity and colorful force of the brush stroke. Looking for material to celebrate the anniversary of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, I came across the interesting work of this artist that I want to share with you in two posts. In this first, his expressionist tribute to the "degenerate artists" with a series of portraits that, as usual, serves to me as an excuse to revisit some that I especially like, and to review works and information on others not yet addressed in the blog.

«From approximately 1927 through World War II, the Nazi Regime confiscated, banned and destroyed artwork that they felt to be Entartete Kunst, or “Degenerate Art”. Artists who created works labeled as “Degenerate” were removed from their jobs, banned from free creative expression, and prevented from exhibiting or producing their art. The Degenerate Series is a collection of Portraits and Original Compositions done in oil which serve to acknowledge and honor the great art and artists affected by the Nazi Regime.»

Christian Rohlfs

"Freiligrath-Haus in Soest", 1906.

Christian Rohlfs was a German painter born in 1849, one of the important representatives of German expressionism.
He took up painting as a teenager while convalescing from an infection that was eventually to lead to the amputation of a leg in 1874.
He began his formal artistic education in Berlin, before transferring, in 1870, to the Weimar Academy. Initially he painted large-scale landscapes, working through a variety of academic, naturalist, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist styles. In 1901 left Weimar for Hagen, where the collector Karl Ernst Osthaus had offered him a studio in the modern art museum he was setting up there. Meetings with Edvard Munch and Emil Nolde and the experience of seeing the works of Vincent van Gogh inspired him to move towards the expressionist style, in which he would work for the rest of his career.
He lived in Munich and the Tyrol in 1910-12, before returning to Hagen. In 1929 the town of Hagen opened a Christian Rohlfs Museum. In 1937 the Nazis expelled him from the Prussian Academy of Arts, condemned his work as degenerate, and removed his works from public collections. He died in 1938.

Erich Heckel was a German painter and printmaker born in 1883, and a founding member of the Die Brücke group ("The Bridge").
Between 1897 and 1904 he attended the Realgymnasium in Chemnitz, before beginning studies in architecture at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden. He left after three terms, shortly after the foundation of Die Brücke, an artists' group of which he was secretary and treasurer.
In December 1911, Erich Heckel moved from Dresden to Berlin. Die Brücke was dissolved in 1913. He was classified as unfit for active service during the First World War, but volunteered to serve in an ambulance unit stationed in Belgium. He managed to continue to produce work throughout the war.
In 1937 the Nazi Party declared his work "degenerate"; it forbade him to show his work in public, and more than 700 items of his art were confiscated from German museums. By 1944 all of his woodcut blocks and print plates had been destroyed. After World War II Heckel lived at Gaienhofen near Lake Constance, teaching at the Karlsruhe Academy until 1955. He continued painting until his death at Radolfzell in 1970.
