Wyeth a menudo decía: "Yo pinto mi vida".

On July 6 is the birthday of

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, Mexican painter born in Coyoacán in 1907.
I refer to the previous posts for more images and information.

Oswaldo Aparicio Guayasamín Calero, Ecuadorian master painter and sculptor of Quechua and Mestizo heritage born in Quito, 1919.
He graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Quito as a painter and sculptor. He also studied architecture there. He held his first exhibition when he was 23, in 1942.
While he was attending college, his best friend died during a demonstration in Quito. This incident would later inspire one of his paintings, "Los Niños Muertos" (The Dead Children). This event also helped him to form his vision about the people and the society that he lived in.
Guayasamín met Jose Clemente Orozco while traveling in the United States of America and Mexico from 1942 to 1943. They traveled together to many of the diverse countries in South America. They visited Peru, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and other countries. Through these travels he observed the indigenous lifestyle and poverty that appeared in his paintings.
He died in 1999.

On July 7 is the birthday of

Marc Chagall, (Mark Zajárovich Shagal, Марк Захарович Шагал), Belarussian-Russian-French artist born in 1887.
I refer to the previous posts for more images and information.

Gely Mikhailovich Korzhev-Chuvelev (Гелий Михайлович Коржев-Чувелев), Russian painter born in 1925. The artist studied at Moscow State Art School from 1939 to 1944 under V. V. Pochitalov, M. V. Dobroserdov, and A. O. Barshch. From 1944 to 1950 he studied at the Moscow State Art Institute under S. V. Gerasimov and V. V. Pochitalov. A painter in Soviet approved style of Socialist Realism, he continued to be active after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and remained a supporter of Communism.
He died in 2012.

On July 8 is the birthday of

Käthe Kollwitz, painter, sculptor, writer, pacifist and remarkable German graphic artist. One of the leading figures of critical realism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century whose "Mother with dead son", known as "La Pieta Kollwitz" occupies the tribute to the fallen at the Neue Wache in Berlin.
During 1885-1886 studied in Berlin under the direction of Karl Stauffer. At this time she met Max Klinger, whose work influenced her decisively.
In 1920 she was the first woman admitted to the Akademie der Künste Berlin.
Forced to give up her academic position with the advent of Nazism in 1933, her work was removed from museums and prohibited any display although the Nazis used the image of mother and child as propaganda. In 1936 she was arrested by the Gestapo, but due to her fame and age was allowed to leave Berlin. She died in 1945.

Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi, Italian Baroque painter born in 1593, today considered one of the most accomplished painters in the generation following that of Caravaggio. In an era when women painters were not easily accepted by the artistic community or patrons, she was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence.
She painted many pictures of strong and suffering women from myth and the Bible—victims, suicides, warriors—and made it her speciality to paint the Judith story. Her best-known work is Judith Slaying Holofermes (a well-known medieval and baroque subject in art), which "shows the decapitation of Holofernes, a scene of horrific struggle and blood-letting". That she was a woman painting in the seventeenth century and that she was raped and participated in prosecuting the rapist, long overshadowed her achievements as an artist. For many years she was regarded as a curiosity. Today she is regarded as one of the most progressive and expressionist painters of her generation.

On July 9 is the birthday of

Leon Dabo, American tonal landscape of French origin, born in 1864, known for his paintings of New York, especially the Hudson Valley. His paintings are characterized by a feeling of spaciousness, with large areas of canvas with little more than some land, sea and clouds. In his heyday, was considered a master of his art, gaining recognition from other greats of his era. His brother Scott Dabo was also a prominent painter. He studied in France, Munich and spent a time in London.
While he began a career as a muralist, finally decided to paint landscapes, and his works were rejected in the United States until the respected French artist Edmond Aman-Jean recognized his talent and began exhibiting his work in France with great success. It was a spy behind German lines during World War 1. He died in 1960.

Saturnino Herrán Guinchard, Mexican painter born in 1887.
In 1897 he took private drawing lessons in his native city and in 1901 entered the Aguascalientes Academy of Science. He took classes with José Inés Tovilla and Severo Amador, who taught him drawing and painting. In 1903, his father died. Two years later his family moved to Mexico City, where his fellow pupils were Diego Rivera and Roberto Montenegro. In 1906 he attended classes given by Leandro Izaguirre and Germán Gedovius in the National School of Fine Arts.
Herrán did majestic paintings of Mexican indigenous people, giving them heroic strength and dignity. His figures have been associated with the traditions of Spanish art, particularly the work of Velázquez and José de Rivera, and also the Catalan modernism.
The ambition to be a mural painter appeared at the end of his brief career, and in 1911 he completed large-scale paintings in the School of Arts and Crafts.
He died in 1918.

On July 10 is the birthday of

Jacob Abraham Camille Pissarro, Impressionist painter born in Saint Thomas in 1830. He is considered one of the founders of the impressionist movement. As dean of Impressionism had an important role of moral conscience and artistic guide. He painted French rural life and scenes from Montmartre. Among his disciples Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Jean Peské and Henri-Martin  Lamotte counted.
In 1855 he moved to Paris, where he attended the School of Fine Arts and the Academy of Jules Suisse. He studied with the French landscape painter Camille Corot and became friends with Claude Monet, Cézanne and Armand Guillaumin. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), he returned to live in England, where he studied English art and especially the landscapes of William Turner. He died in 1903.

Giorgio de Chirico, Greek-born (1888) Italian artist. In the years before World War I, he founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. After 1919, he became interested in traditional painting techniques, and worked in a neoclassical or neo-Baroque style, while frequently revisiting the metaphysical themes of his earlier work.
De Chirico won praise for his work almost immediately from the writer Guillaume Apollinaire, who helped to introduce his work to the later Surrealists. De Chirico strongly influenced the Surrealist movement: Yves Tanguy wrote how one day in 1922 he saw one of De Chirico's paintings in an art dealer's window, and was so impressed by it he resolved on the spot to become an artist—although he had never even held a brush. Other Surrealists who acknowledged De Chirico's influence include Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, and René Magritte. Other artists as diverse as Giorgio Morandi, Carlo Carrà, Paul Delvaux, Carel Willink, and Philip Guston were influenced by De Chirico. He died in 1978.

On July 11 is the birthday of

Borís Dmítrievich Grigóriev (Борис Дмитриевич Григорьев), Russian painter and graphic designer born in Rybinsk in 1886.
He studied at the Moscow State University of Industrial Arts Stroganov between 1903 and 1907, and later in the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, under the teachings of Aleksandr Kiselyov, Dmitry Kardovsky and Abram Arkhipov, between 1907 and 1912. He began exhibiting his work in 1909 as a member of the "Union of the Impressionists", and was a member of the Mir iskusstva movement in 1913. During that period he was also interested in literature, and wrote the novel Young Rays.
Grigoriev lived for a time in Paris, where he studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere.
Between 1916 and 1918 he created a series of paintings and works entitled Russia, showing poverty and strength of Russian peasant life.
From 1919, Grigoriev traveled and lived in several countries, including Finland, Germany, France, United States, and Central and South America. In 1928 he traveled to Chile, where he was professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and jury Official Salon of that year. Died in 1939

James Abbott McNeill Whistler, American-born (1834), British-based artist active during the American Gilded Age. Averse to sentimentality and moral allusion in painting, he was a leading proponent of the credo, "art for art's sake". His famous signature for his paintings was in the shape of a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. The symbol was apt, for it combined both aspects of his personality—his art was characterized by a subtle delicacy, while his public persona was combative. Finding a parallel between painting and music, Whistler entitled many of his paintings "arrangements", "harmonies", and "nocturnes", emphasizing the primacy of tonal harmony. His most famous painting is Whistler's Mother (1871), the revered and oft parodied portrait of motherhood. Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers.
He died in 1903.

Today, July 12, is the birthday of

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, Italian painter and sculptor, belonging to the so-called School of Paris. He was born in 1884 in Livorno.
Archetypal bohemian artist, in his life was in drugs, alcohol, women, poverty and disease, and only became famous after death. At age 14, Amedeo ("Finger", as they called him in his family) started taking painting classes with Guglielmo Micheli. In 1906 he moved to Paris, at that time the center of the avant-garde. In the Bateau-Lavoir, a phalanstery for proletarians of Paris, meets Max Jacob, Van Dongen, Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire, Diego Rivera, Chaim Soutine, Vicente Huidobro and other celebrities. Influenced initially by Toulouse-Lautrec, Amedeo finds inspiration in Paul Cézanne, Cubism and Picasso's Blue Period. It is also obvious the influence of Gustav Klimt prints and the Japanese Utamaro. His speed of execution makes him famous. Never retouched his paintings, but those who posed for him said it was as if somebody had bared their souls.
He died in 1920.

Andrew Newell Wyeth, American visual artist, primarily a realist painter, working predominantly in a regionalist style. He was one of the best-known U.S. artists of the middle 20th century.
He was born in 1917. In his art, Wyeth's favorite subjects were the land and people around him, both in his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and at his summer home in Cushing, Maine. Wyeth often noted: "I paint my life." One of the best-known images in 20th-century American art is his painting, Christina's World, currently in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This tempera was painted in 1948 when Wyeth was 31 years old.

  1. Hola Javi!!!
