Llegó a EE.

On April 20 is the birthday of

Franz Xaver Winterhalter, German painter and lithographer born in 1805, especially known for his portraits of royalty made the mid-nineteenth century. Among his best known works are Empress Eugénie and the portraits of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi). He left the Menzenschwand village at age 13 to study drawing and engraving. He was apprenticed as a draftsman and lithographer in the workshop of Karl Ludwig Schüler in Freiburg. In 1823, at age 18, he went to Munich. He moved to France and was appointed court painter of King Louis Philippe of France. No portrait painter ever enjoyed royal patronage as Winterhalter. Only Rubens and Van Dyck worked as he somewhat internationally. He died in 1873.

Atilio Malinverno, Argentine painter born in 1890. He was a post-Impressionist, a part of a movement started in the first decade of the twentieth century.
With a solitary temperament, he devoted himself exclusively to landscape painting in his free time from working in his advertising agency. The main topics of his works are the hills of Cordoba, the Pampas plains, the mountains of Tandil, the coast of Quilmes, the "barrancas" of San Isidro and Piriapolis, in the República Oriental del Uruguay.
He moved with his easel towards Cordoba hills where he created works that later when he returned to Buenos Aires he successfully sold in art exhibitions.
He studied art at the "Asociación de Estímulo de Bellas Artes", and made several trips to study art in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay. He died in 1936.

On April 21 is the birthday of

Jean Helion, French painter born in Normandy in 1904, whose abstract work in the 1930s established him as a leader in modern art. He moved to the United States in July 1936 and returned to France during World War II in 1940 joining the army. He was captured in June 1940 and was on a prison ship at Stettin an der Oder (now Szczecin, Poland) until February 1942, when he escaped. He arrived to USA in October, where he spoke on the radio and lectured in favor of a Free France. In mid-career rejected abstraction. It was followed by five decades of figurative painting. He was also the author of several books and a large body of critical writings. He died in 1987.

Ludovico (or Lodovico) Carracci, Italian, early-Baroque painter, etcher, and printmaker born in Bologna in 1555. His works are characterized by a strong mood invoked by broad gestures and flickering light that create spiritual emotion and are credited with reinvigorating Italian art, especially fresco art, which was subsumed with formalistic Mannerism.
Ludovico apprenticed under Prospero Fontana in Bologna and traveled to Florence, Parma, and Venice, before returning to his hometown. Together with his cousins Annibale and Agostino Carracci, Ludovico worked in Bologna on the fresco cycles depicting Histories of Jason and Medea (1584) in Palazzo Fava, and the Histories of Romulus and Remus (1590-1592) for the Palazzo Magnani. He died in Bologna in 1619.

On April 22 is the birthday of

Richard Diebenkorn, American painter born in 1922. His early work is associated with Abstract Expressionism, and "Figurative Movement of the Bay", a stream in which a group of artists from the Bay of San Francisco turned aside Abstract Expressionism for a return to figuration in painting during the '50s and '60s. Having served as a Marine during World War II, he devoted himself to painting at first influenced by artists such as Clyfford Still, Arshile Gorky, Hassel Smith and Willem de Kooning. In the mid-'50s he was yet a figurative painter whose style was a bridge between abstract expressionism and Henri Matisse. His first exhibition was in 1948 and the first major retrospective in 1976. He died in 1993.

Odilon Redon, French symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist born in 1840.
Redon started drawing as a child and at the age of ten he was awarded a drawing prize at school. He began the formal study of drawing at fifteen, but at his father's insistence changed to architecture. Failure to pass the entrance exams at Paris’ École des Beaux-Arts ended any plans for a career as an architect, although he briefly studied painting there under Jean-Léon Gérôme in 1864. His artistic career was interrupted in 1870 when he joined the army to serve in the Franco-Prussian War.
At the end of the war, he moved to Paris, and resumed working almost exclusively in charcoal and lithography. He called his visionary works, conceived in shades of black, his noirs. It was not until 1878 that his work gained any recognition with Guardian Spirit of the Waters; he published his first album of lithographs, titled Dans le Rêve, in 1879. Still, Redon remained relatively unknown until the appearance in 1884 of a cult novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans titled À rebours (Against Nature). He died in 1916.

On April 23 is the birthday of

Joseph Mallord William Turner, English landscape painter born in Covent Garden in 1751, considered a controversial figure in his time, seen today as the artist who elevated landscape at the height of history painting. Regarded as "the painter of light", his work is a kind of Romantic preface to Impressionism. Turner entered the Royal Academy of Art when he was just 14 years old. In 1790, after only one year of study, one of his watercolors was accepted for the summer exhibition of the Royal Academy that year. His first oil painting, Fishermen at Sea, was exhibited in 1796. During the rest of his life, he exhibited regularly at the Academy. He is considered one of the founders of English watercolor landscape painting. He died in 1851.

Frans Thomas Koppelaar, Dutch painter born in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1943.
From 1963 - 1969 he attended the Royal Academy of Visual Arts at The Hague. He moved to Amsterdam in 1968.
His landscapes and Amsterdam cityscapes are painted in a style that recalls the classical tradition of the Hague School and the Amsterdam Impressionists.
Koppelaar's work is congenial to a figurative movement in Dutch contemporary painting that evolved during the 1990s in a reaction to the pared-down conceptual art and the too pompous art-theories of that period. Through the years his style evolved into a simpler, straightforward approach. By 1984, he no longer identified himself with any art movement.
Koppelaar is also known as a portraitist.

On April 24 is the birthday of

César Manrique Cabrera, Spanish painter, sculptor, architect and artist born in the island of Lanzarote. He combined his work with the defense of the environmental values of the Canary Islands. He sought harmony between art and nature as a creative space.
In 1942 was his first solo exhibition in Arrecife, and in the 50s he founded the Fernando Fe gallery, the first non-figurative of Spain. In 1964 he moved to New York where he exhibited and had contact with American artistic movements. In 1966 he settled in Lanzarote, where the tourism industry began to develop. From 1973 he began to work closely with the architect Fernando Higueras developed numerous works. He died in 1992.

Federico Assler Brown, Chilean sculptor born in 1929.
In 1954 he entered the School of Architecture of the Catholic University of Valparaiso, where he remained two years; subsequently entered the School of Fine Arts in Viña del Mar. His first works were linked to the painting, but his interest in representing the volume took him to sculpture. Along with Raul Valdivieso, Sergio Mallol and Sergio Castillo Mandiola, among others, was part of the Generation of 1950, a group of sculptors characterized by experimentation with new techniques and materials. He was also part of the group Rectangle. In 1973 he traveled to Spain, where he lived ten years.
After returning to Chile, became a member of the Organization of Sculptors in 1989. It was transformed in the Sculptors Society of Chile (1995), being appointed as its director Assler.
On 24 August 2009 he was awarded the National Prize of Plastic Arts of Chile.

On April 25 is the birthday of

Markus Lüpertz, German painter, sculptor and writer born in 1941 in Liberec (now Czech Republic), linked to the postmodern Neo-expressionism movement. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krefeld and Düsseldorf Academy of Art. He settled in 1962 in West Berlin, where he created the gallery with 35 Grossgör Koberling Bernd and Karl Horst Hödicke.
In 1976 he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, and a year later had his first retrospective at the Kunsthalle Hamburg, which was followed by other exhibitions. The artist uses a wide variety of genres, materials and techniques for configuring nature according to his own reality. As a writer, Lüpertz publishes his own magazine "Frau und Hund" since 2003.

Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger, French figure painter known for his classical and Orientalist subjects, born in 1824.
He studied with Delaroche and Jollivet, and in 1849 took the Prix de Rome. His paintings are prime examples of academic art of the time, particularly history painting. Boulanger had visited Italy, Greece, and North Africa, and his paintings reflect his attention to culturally correct details and skill in rendering the female form. His works include a Moorish Cafe (1848), Cæsar at the Rubicon (1865), the Promenade in the Street of Tombs, Pompeii (1869), and The Slave Market (1888). The recipient of many medals, he became a member of the Institut de France in 1882, and died in 1988.

Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Finnish craftsman, illustrator and painter born in 1865. He studied at the Finnish Art Society since 1884 and the Academie Julian in Paris.
During his honeymoon in Eastern Karelia began collecting material for his depictions of the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, while his style was decanted into a romantic symbolism. After the death of his daughter in 1895, his painting shifted to a more aggressive theme.
During the last years of his life he continued experimenting and exhibiting with Die Brücke, the German Expressionist group to which he belonged since 1907. He died in 1931.

Chris Mars, American artist born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1968, where he currently lives and works.
After a stint in the world of music as a drummer of The Replacements (band he founded in 1979 together with Bob Stinson, Tommy Stinson and Paul Westerberg) and four solo albums, Chris turned to fine art. Deeply marked by schizophrenia suffered by his brother since young, his work became a catharsis of this empathy. His creations can be found in numerous museums and public collections in the United States.
