Augusta Savage
(Green Cove Springs, Florida, EE.UU./ FL, USA, 1892 -
Nueva York / NY, 1962)

"El arpa / The Harp", yeso imitando basalto negro / plaster finished to resemble black basalt

Augusta trabajando en la escultura / at work with the sculpture

Augusta Savage, born Augusta Christine Fells, wan an African-American sculptress born in 1892, associated with the Harlem Renaissance.
She was appointed the first director of the Harlem Community Art Center and was commissioned by the New York World's Fair of 1939 to create a sculpture symbolizing the musical contributions of African Americans. Negro spirituals and hymns were the forms Savage decided to symbolize in The Harp. Inspired by the lyrics of James Weldon Johnson's poem "Lift Every Voice and Sing", The Harp was Savage's largest work and her last major commission.

She took a leave of absence from her position at the Harlem Community Art Center and spent almost two years completing the sixteen-foot sculpture. Cast in plaster and finished to resemble black basalt, The Harp was exhibited in the court of the Contemporary Arts building where it received much acclaim. The sculpture depicted a group of twelve stylized black singers in graduated heights that symbolized the strings of the harp. The sounding board was formed by the hand and arm of God, and a kneeling man holding music represented the foot pedal. No funds were available to cast The Harp, nor were there any facilities to store it. After the fair closed it was demolished as was all the art.

Fritz von Uhde
(Wolkenburg, Sachsen, Deutsches Reich /
Sajonia, Imperio Alemán / Saxony, German Empire, 1848 -
München / Múnich / Munich, 1911)

"La hija del artista en verano / The Artist's Daughter in Summer"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 165 x 178 cm., 1898

Fritz von Uhde (Friedrich Hermann Carl Uhde) was a German painter of genre and religious subjects born in 1848. His style laying between Realism and Impressionism, he was once known as "Germany's outstanding impressionist" and he became one of the first painters who introduced en plein air art in his country.
Uhde found art appealing while studying at the Gymnasium at this city, and in 1866 he was admitted to the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Totally at variance with the spirit prevailing there, later that year he left his studies to join the army. After meeting the painter Makart in Vienna in 1876, Uhde left the army in 1877 with the intention to become an artist. He moved to Munich in that year to attend the Academy of Fine Arts. There, he particularly came to admire the Dutch old masters, specially Rembrandt.
In 1879 he traveled to Paris where his studies of the Dutch painters continued under Mihály Munkácsy's supervision.
In 1882 a journey to the Netherlands brought about a change in his style, as he abandoned the dark chiaroscuro he had learned in Munich in favor of a colorism informed by the works of the French Impressionists. Encouraged by his contemporary Max Liebermann, whose portrait he painted, Uhde painted Fishermen's Children in Zandvoort (1882) as an experiment in plein-air painting, but chose to exhibit a more conventional version of the composition, the Arrival of the Organ-Grinder (1883; Kunsthalle Hamburg). This conflict between innovation and caution characterized the greater part of his career.
He died in 1911.

Carl Heinrich Bloch

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 398 x 294 cm., 1864.
Única fotografía existente de la obra / The only extant photograph of the painting

The painting shows the moment Prometheus is released from the eagle by Hercules. Prometheus's body still rests on the steep rocks, but the chains are broken by the sound of the bow of Hercules, when the eagle is crossed by the arrow. The work became a great success in the exhibition of 1865 in Chatterborg, and could reflect the dreams of recovering of Danish people after the unfortunate result of the war of 1864. After this success, Bloch was appointed member of the Academy of Fine Arts.
The painting has been lost, but there are two preliminary studies in Ribe Kunstmuseum: a sketch of the entire painting (see below) and a section of dead eagle, 68 x 95,5 cm.

Dom Sebastião

Entrada a la estación / Entrance to the Station

The statue of Dom Sebastiao before it was destroyed

The news appeared in the press a few days ago: a young man who tried to take a selfie, destroyed a valuable statue at Rossio train station in Lisbon.
The work was placed between the two arches of the entrance to the station (masterpiece of Manueline style) since 1890. It represented the Portuguese King Sebastião I, whose death in battle in Morocco in 1578 gave rise to the birth of "Sebastianism", a popular mystique movement according which the monarch would return to restore the Portuguese empire, at that time under the dominion of Spain (1580-1640).
Here you have pictures of the work, how it was after its destruction, and an informative video (in Portuguese) with the news of the event.
