Alexander Mikhailovich Gerasimov

Tambov Region, Russian Empire, 1881 -
Moscú, RSFS de Rusia, URSS /
Moscow, RSFSR, USSR, 1963)

Alexander Mikhaylovich Gerasimov (Алекса́ндр Миха́йлович Гера́симов) was a leading proponent of Socialist Realism in the visual arts, and painted Joseph Stalin and other Soviet leaders.
He was born on 1881 in Kozlov (now Michurinsk) in Tambov Governorate. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture from 1903 to 1915. There he championed traditional realistic representational art against the avant-garde.
During World War I and the Russian Civil War he served in the army. Subsequently he returned to his hometown to become a stage designer, helping to present plays glorifying the Revolution and the Soviet government.
In 1925, Gerasimov returned to Moscow and set up a studio, combining techniques of academic realism with an Impressionistic light touch. He favored a style known as heroic realism, which featured images of Revolutionary leaders such as Vladimir Lenin as larger-than-life heroes. However, as Stalin tightened his grip on the country, Gerasimov's work descended into pompous official portraits, such as "Stalin and Voroshilov in the Kremlin," for which he won a Stalin Prize in 1941. He produced a large number of heroic portraits of Kliment Voroshilov, to the point that Nikita Khrushchev would later accuse Voroshilov of having spent most of his time in Gerasimov's studio, to the detriment of his responsibilities as People's Commissar of Defense.
He died in 1963.

El Coloso de Constantino / The Colossus of Constantine

One of the right hands of the colossal statue of Constantine I (Colossus of Constantinus)
Mármol / marble, alto / height: 166 cm., 313-324 D.C. / A.D.
Museos Capitolinos, Roma, Italia / Capitloline Museums, Rome, Italy

The Colossus of Constantine was a colossal acrolithic statue of the late Roman emperor Constantine the Great (c. 280–337) that once occupied the west apse of the Basilica of Maxentius near the Forum Romanum in Rome. Portions of the Colossus now reside in the Courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori of the Musei Capitolini, on the Capitoline Hill, above the west end of the Forum.
Strangely there are two right hands (with upraised index fingers) amongst the remains of the statue, which differ slightly. It has been proposed that the statue was re-worked at some time late in Constantine's reign and a hand holding a sceptre was replaced by a hand holding a Christian symbol.

Elie Nadelman
(Warszawa, Polska / Varsovia, Polonia / Warsaw, Poland, 1882 -
Nueva York, EE.UU./ NY, USA, 1946)

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) (Nueva York, Estados Unidos / NY, USA)

Elie Nadelman was an American sculptor, draughtsman and collector of folk art born in 1882.
Nadelman was born and studied briefly in Warsaw and then visited Munich in 1902 where he became interested in Classical antiquities at the Glyptothek. He lived in Paris from 1904 to 1914, closely involved with the avant-garde, exhibiting at the Société des Artistes Indépendants and at the Salon d'Automne from 1905 to 1908. His first solo exhibition in 1909 at the Galerie Druet, Paris, revealed a large series of plaster and bronze classical female heads and full-length standing nudes and mannered Cubist drawings; the latter purchased by Leo Stein, who had brought Picasso to Nadelman's studio in 1908.
He moved to the United States (becoming an American citizen in 1927) during the outbreak of World War I.
From the 1920s, until his death, Nadelman lived and worked in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx.
Eventually, as his wealth vanished in the Depression and his work failed to interest the art world, he became more peripheral to the collectors of Modernism. He did not take commissions other than portraits.
He died in 1946.
