Pintando perros / Painting Dogs (XLV)

Boris Mikhaylovich Kustodiev

Retrato de / Portrait of Fyodor Chaliapin"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 99 x 80 cm., 1922
Museo Estatal Ruso (San Petersburgo, Rusia / St. Petersbourg, Russia)

Retrato de / Portrait of Fyodor Chaliapin" (detalle / detail)

At this time the opera singer Feodor Chaliapin was preparing to perform in Alexander Serov's opera The Power of the Fiend in the former Mariinsky Theatre. He invited Boris Kustodiev to create artwork for the performance.
The upheaval caused by the February and October Revolutions and the Russian Civil War led to desperate conditions in the cities. The currency was devalued and there was no money for the theatre to pay Chaliapin for his performance. Instead the theatre offered Chaliapin a rich fur coat, taken from a Soviet warehouse containing items confiscated from rich people during the revolution.
Chaliapin wore the coat on a visit to Kustodiev to invite him to design artworks for the performance. Kustodiev was ill at the time and was unable to walk. When Kustodiev learned of the coat’s history, confiscated from its previous owner, he announced his intention to paint a portrait of Chaliapin in this coat. Thus began a double work: Feodor Chaliapin brought Kustodiev to the theatre to work on the stage scenery, and Kustodiev painted Chaliapin's portrait at home.
The Soviet government had allocated only a small room to Kustodiev, and there was not enough space to work on a single canvas. Instead Kustodiev painted it in parts. Chaliapin talked about himself as he posed, and at times they sang together.
The Portrait of Chaliapin is typical of Kustodiev's style, and is set against a background of festivity, specifically the Russian traditions of Maslenitsa.
Kustodiev included in the scene Chaliapin’s favourite dog.

Francis-Marie Martínez Picabia
(París, Francia / France, 1879 - 1953)

"Basket", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 50 x 39 cm., 1936-38.

"Mujeres y bulldog / Women and Bulldog", 1942.

Picabia always had a fascination with popular imagery, often employing it as a means to undermine the grave seriousness and formal concerns of modern art. In this painting, part of a notorious series of realistic and erotic nudes that he painted in the early 1940s, he used pin-ups from 1930s "nudie" magazines. Though many believe they were painted for money (they were sold through an agent in Algiers), his close friends have maintained that Picabia always painted what he wanted and that they cannot be dismissed as anomalies in his career. Curators after the war often did put them aside in favor of celebrating Picabia's Dada years, yet since the 1980s these pictures have been an important influence on artists ranging from David Salle to John Currin, who have been fascinated by their embrace of kitsch.

"Chien de cirque / Perro de circo / Circus Dog"

"Têtes de Chiens / Cabezas de perros / Heads of Dogs"
Tiza negra, acuarela y grafito sobre papel / black chalk, watercolor and graphite on paper, 1926

Francis-Marie Martinez Picabia was a French avant-garde painter of Cuban origin born in 1879. He died in 1953.
As I recently told my colleague Olga, is an artist whom I have great affection, as he painted the first non-figurative work of art that I liked (Udnie, jeune fille américaine). I published it a few years  ago.
Picabia transited by Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Orphism, Dadaism, Surrealism and Abstract Art, and in many of his works appear dogs. Here you have some of them.
