Klaus Pichler projects are extremely interesting, especially because of the originality of them and the unique perspective of his approaches. No missing critical and above all humor when exposing issues such as food waste or his vision of the Austrian middle class in the '60s. A selection of images from some of his projects, but I recommend checking out the rest of his work.

Klaus Pichler

Proyecto "Sólo nosotros dos" / Project "Just the Two of Us"

Proyecto "Esqueletos en el armario" / Project "Skeletons in the Closet"

Proyecto "Esqueletos en el armario" / Project "Skeletons in the Closet"

Proyecto "Nosotros dos" / Project "Just the Two of Us"

Proyecto "Idilios" / Project "Idylls"

«I wanted to make a classy and ‘iconic’ shot of a kitschy silver bowel with ornaments, filled with rotting strawberries. The bowel I bought at the local flea market for some Euros and the strawberries are from a nearby supermarket (although produced more than 700km away). Since rotting food is shrinking during the process of decomposition I had to work with a trick to prevent the strawberries from sinking below the border of the bowel. I used red lentils as a basement for the strawberries, they were layered up to almost the half of the bowel. The strawberry pile came on top of that lentils bed. The lentils began to swell once they got drenched with the fluid of the rotten strawberries and I also put some additional water into the bowel. So the whole pile of lentils increased its volume and the strawberries didn’t disappear below the bowel’s border.»

«Who hasn't had the desire just to become someone else for a while? Dressing up is a way of creating an alter ego and a second skin which one's behaviour can be adjusted to. Regardless of the motivating factors which cause somebody to acquire a costume, the main principle remains the same: the civilian steps behind the mask and turns into somebody else. For this photo series I visited owners of elaborate costumes in their own homes. As a matter of fact, 'just the two of us' deals with both: the costumes and the people behind them.»

Proyecto "Sólo nosotros dos" / Project "Just the Two of Us"

About his "Just the Two of Us" project, Klaus said:
«The research was the hardest part. I needed almost three years. If someone came up to me and asked if they could take a picture of me in costume at home, I'd think that person was crazy. Many groups have a strong affinity for the Internet and meet in online forums. In some cases, I also went to regular meet-ups and to events where I discussed the idea with people. At times I got the impression people didn't immediately understand what I was I wanted -- I had to explain it to them very precisely.»

According to a UN study, one third of the world’s food goes to waste – the largest part thereof in the industrialized nations of the global north. Equally, 925 million people around the world are threatened by starvation.
The series of photographs titled ‘One Third’ describes the connection between individual wastage of food and globalized food production. Rotting food, arranged into elaborate still lifes, portrays an abstract picture of the wastage of food whilst theaccompanying texts take a more in depth look at the roots of this issue.
‘One Third’ goes past the sell by date in order to document the full dimensions of the global food waste.

Proyecto "Idilios" / Project "Idylls"

«A box full of slides which I stumbled upon at a house clearance turned out to be a portray of the self image of a middle class family in the early 1960s. A family at a time of new wealth- enjoying a day out, a fair or a seaside holiday, in peace and harmony. Taking a closer look at the pictures in the context of this cultural era, it becomes apparent that they precisely represent the mainstream ideology of the 1960s: just escaped the perils of the Nazi regime, the reconstruction of the country completed, society was able to enjoy the benefits of an economic boom. A clear notion of right and wrong had developed. Devout, hard working, prudish and strait-laced, forever prim and proper. I was equally fascinated and disgusted by the sheer amount of uptightness, which caused me to search for an element which would contradict the moral values of this era and therefore reinterpret scenes of homely bliss. Then I found: Myself! Naked!»

«In my opinion, editing is almost as important as taking photos itself, especially when you work on a topic. Not only to select pictures, but to get a good feeling for the whole thing, the strengths and weaknesses of the series and the gaps which have to be filled. I spend long hours with the photographs of a new series, selecting them, arranging them, trying to get a feeling for the role of every single picture in the complete series. And also to find out, when one or more new pictures are added, if (and if yes, how) they change the whole series. I think in every series there are some 'pillar images' - the ones that carry the whole series - and it is very important to find out which ones take this function. When I am in the final stage of a new series, I sometimes get the feeling that every picture is like a close relative for me whom I know for a very long time.»

Proyecto "Esqueletos en el armario" / Project "Skeletons in the Closet"

On the project 'Skeletons in the closet':
«It all started when I happened to catch a glimpse through a basement window of the Museum of Natural History Vienna one night: an office with a desk, a computer, shelves and a stuffed antelope. This experience left me wondering: what does a museum look like behind the scenes? How are exhibits stored when they are not on display? (...) As a photographer with limited knowledge of scientific research methods, the museum’s back rooms presented to me a huge array of still lives. Their creation is determined by the need to find space saving storage solutions for the preservation of objects but also the fact that work on and with the exhibits is an ongoing process.»
