Today we approach the work of the American Bridgette Guerzon Mills. She is a painter, installation artist and creator of a wide variety of artist's books in which nature is key as inspiration, support and component, to the point that some pieces take shape and make sense in the very natural environment from which the materials used come from.

Bridgette Guerzon Mills, 2017
Finishing up "Keepers of Life", a textile art piece about Colony Collapse Disorder that will be installed at Lake Roland's Art on the Trail in Baltimore.

Libro abierto / Book Open, técnica mixta / mixed media, 2020

"When Maryland first went into lockdown with the schools closing, I pulled out my journal set on writing in it everyday. Marking, recording, and witnessing what we were going through as a family, as a community, as a country. I kept it up a few days, but then I just didn’t want to write. It was all too much.
I wasn’t getting time in the studio as I mentioned in previous posts. One day I decided to just go in and at least clean up. As I piled up some of photos, I felt moved to take an image and add words to them. And so my pandemic journal began.
These had to be simple, as I did not need another demanding thing on me. The palette is limited. The words come from found text from one book- an old Grimm’s Fairy Tale that I got from a library rummage sale years ago."

"a veces
creo que el viento
es algo más que
corrientes de aire"

La segunda página con texto dice:
"son los espíritus
de los que he conocido
e incluso de otros
de mis propios desconocidos"

La tercera página con texto dice:
"espíritus que me recuerdan
su presencia
y la impermanencia de la vida"

"Spirits" includes the words i had written down in my journal after one of my sisters passed away.

The first page with words say:
"sometimes
i think that the wind
is more than just
currents of air"

The second page with words say:
"it is the spirits
of those i've known
and even others
of my own unknown"

Third page says:
"spirits reminding me
of their presence
and the impermanence of life"

Bridgette Guerzon Mills

Bridgette Guerzon Mills is an artist whose work incorporates a variety of techniques and materials including photography, paint, encaustic, as well as fiber, textiles, and other reclaimed materials. Her artwork and journals have been published in magazines and books and her work has been collected in the United States and internationally. She currently resides in Towson, MD with her family.
As a mixed media artist, encaustic is a versatile medium that allows her to create depth in layers and serves as a means for further exploration in both form and meaning. She combines her photography with encaustics to create a bridge between two worlds, the real and the reconstructed. The canvas becomes a multi-layered surface that speaks to both the visual and tactile sense.
Her outdoor installations, often created using foraged or recycled materials, focus on environmental issues and seek to engage and educate the public about these concerns.

"I am drawn to the inherent beauty and spirit of the natural world, and my artwork is a personal dialogue that reaches into the stillness of that spirit. Through both imagery and medium, I create organic pieces that speak to the cycles of life, growth and decay, memory and the passage of time."

Poetic translation

Sleep, my baby, on my bosom,
Warm and cozy, will it prove,
Round thee mother's arms are folding,
In her heart a mother's love.
There shall no one come to harm thee,
Naught shall ever break thy rest;
Sleep, my darling babe, in quiet,
Sleep on mother's gentle breast.

Traducción poética

Duerme niña sobre mi pecho,
Es acogedor y cálido;
Los brazos de madre te rodean,
El amor de una madre está en mi pecho;
Nada perturbará tu sueño,
Nadie te hará daño;

Cinzia Farina
(Enna, Sicilia, Italia / Sicily, Italy, 1951-)

Cinzia Farina

The book is a tribute to a great man of Sicilian theater, Franco Scaldati, of the same race as Shakespeare for lyricism and visionary, and Pasolini for his theater that was born among the marginalized and the Palermo underclass. A poet who revives the sold word, the lost word, bringing it back - in a dimension of enchantment and dream - to the infinite popular creativity of orality.

"I was born in 1951 in Enna, umbilicus Siciliae, where I live. Former Art History teacher and journalist. I illustrated children's books, conducted reading and writing workshops, creative reuse of waste materials and unconventional production of clothes, furnishings and objects. Member of Iuoma (International Union of Mail-Artists), I am also active in the worldwide mail art circuit, an experience, connected to the Fluxus world, exciting for the free and free exchange between artists outside of any mercantile logic.
From the expressionist propensity of my youthful years, I moved on to more abstract and conceptual choices, up to visual poetry where the word becomes an image, the artist's book, the assembly and the installation. I prefer to use "lived-in" materials, especially old papers, scraps, which I often mix with threads and fabrics. Lately my research, tending towards a certain minimalism, focuses on transparency, on a light bit strong materiality, which has found in gauze, more or less worked, an infinitely expressive means."
