Pintando perros / Painting Dogs (LXII)

David Dalhoff Neal
(Lowell, Massachusetts, EE.UU./ USA, 1838 - 1915)

David Dalhoff Neal was an American artist born in 1838.

"Después de la caza / After the Hunt", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 158,27 x 118,75 cm., 1870

After the Hunt, Neal’s first great success, was a transitional work between his early architectural paintings and the history paintings that were to win him renown. Although not a history painting, it demonstrates his total mastery of the technique that would make those paintings so successful. Produced while Neal worked in Piloty’s atelier, After the Hunt exemplifies the style of romantic realism practiced and taught by his professor.

David Dalhoff Neal was an American artist born in 1838.
He attended Lowell grammar schools, and high school at Lawrence, Massachusetts. Deciding to devote himself to the study of art, he then attended art classes at the recently opened Andover Academy in Andover, New Hampshire.
In 1857, at the age of 19, Neal settled in San Francisco. He was hired as a draughtsman on wood by a friendly wood-engraver, who took an interest in him, and taught him the art. Soon after, he became the city's best ink drawer upon blocks used by engravers. The first exhibit of his work was at the San Francisco Mechanics' Institute in 1857, and his second was at the 1859 California State Fair. After two years he earned enough money to return to New England for a short while to take art classes at the Andover Academy, but returned to San Francisco when his money ran out. Once back, Neal quickly established himself as one of the city's best portrait artists.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 47,6 x 34,3 cm. Bonhams

Neal arrived in Hamburg on New Year's Eve, 1862. Now, 24 years old, he became a pupil of the Royal Academy, Munich, under Kaulbach where he concentrated on the art of drawing, and then painting and the art of architectural perspective
In 1869 he entered the studio of Alexander Wagner, then Karl von Piloty. In 1873 Neal had an exhibition back in California at the San Francisco Art Academy. He later painted The First Meeting of Mary Stuart and Rizzio, which won him the great medal of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Art, the first awarded to an American. He stayed at the studio till 1876. In 1877, Neal made a year-long whirlwind trip to the United States, bouncing from city to city, traveling and painting as he went.
Neal stayed in Munich, but he traveled extensively to sell and exhibit his works, as he maintained his U.S. citizenship, and divided his time between Germany and USA.
Just after 35 years of marriage, his wife died on September 29, 1897. A few months later, Neal decided to return to the United States for a full two-year painting and exhibition tour.
Just as World War I was beginning, Neal and his family were trapped on the German side.
He died in 1915.

Sir David Wilkie
(Fife, Escocia, Reino Unido / Scotland, UK, 1785 - Gibraltar, 1841)

"La carta de presentación / The Letter of Introduction"
Óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 61 x 50,2 cm., 1813.
National Gallery (Edinburgo, Escocia / Edinburgh, Scotland)

"La carta de presentación / The Letter of Introduction" (detalle / detail)

This subject is based on Wilkie's own experience as a young artist arriving in London with, as he felt, useless letters of introduction to potential patrons. He captures perfectly the awkward pose of a young man uncomfortable in formal clothes being sniffed at by the dog of the unfriendly older gentleman. Although dressed informally in dressing gown, slippers and turban the older man's expression, both calculating and suspicious, does nothing to ease the tension of the moment. The conspicuous presence of a Japanese jar may suggest he is a connoisseur.

"El violinista ciego / The Blind Fiddler", óleo sobre caoba / oil on mahogany, 57,8 x 79,4 cm., 1806. Tate Gallery (Londres, Reino Unido / London, UK)

An itinerant fiddler is playing for a humble country family. David Wilkie focuses on the listeners’ different expressions. Only two people seem to respond to the music: the baby and the boy on the right, who is imitating the fiddler by playing the bellows. When this picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy some critics thought the bust on the shelf represented a dissenting minister, and concluded that the family were nonconformists. The power of music to stir the passions of those supposedly suspicious of pleasure was thought to add to the painting’s subtlety.

David Wilkie Wynfield was a British painter and photographer born in 1937.
He was distantly related to the Scottish artist David Wilkie, after whom he was named. Born in India, he was originally intended by his family for the priesthood, but instead chose art as a profession. He studied at Leigh's art school in the 1850s and his first painting was accepted for the Royal Academy summer exhibition in 1859.
Wynfield associated with a group of other artists who became known as the St. John's Wood Clique. Their work typically took the form of anecdotal historical narratives. Wynfield himself painted many works set in Medieval or Renaissance Europe, concentrating on romantic problems of couples.
In the 1860s Wynfield became interested in photography. He developed a technique of shallow-focus portrait photography which he passed on to Julia Margaret Cameron, who later acknowledged him as the main influence on her own work, writing that "to my feeling about his beautiful photography I owed all my attempts and indeed consequently all my success".
He died in 1887.

John Vanderbank was an English portrait painter and book illustrator born in 1694, who enjoyed a high reputation for a short while during the reign of King George I, but who died relatively young due to an extravagant lifestyle.
Vanderbank studied under Sir Godfrey Kneller at James Thornhill's art academy in Great Queen Street from 1711 until 1720, when he joined with Louis Cheron to found his own academy in St. Martin's Lane. The venture proved a failure, and in 1729 he went to France to avoid his creditors. On his return he entered "the liberties of the Fleet" – mansion houses near Fleet prison, London, in which certain privileged prisoners could serve out their sentences in return for payment.

Vanderbank's portraits, among which are those of many eminent persons, are skilfully drawn and full of character, but slight and careless in execution. He had a great talent for historical composition, and Vertue spoke highly of some of his works of this class.
Vanderbank’s book illustrations include: the portrait of Sir Isaac Newton used in the frontispiece of the 1726 edition of Principia; the 66 plates of the first edition in Spanish of Cervantes' Don Quixote published in London (1738); and illustrations for "Twenty-five Actions of the Manage Horse", engraved by Josephus Sympson (1729). His 1725 portrait of Sir Isaac Newton hangs in Trinity College, Cambridge. Many of his portraits were engraved by John Faber Jr. and George White.
It was noted by George Vertue that "only intemperance prevented Vanderbank from being the greatest portraitist of his generation."
He died in 1739.

"Enrique II de Francia y Diana de Poitiers... / Henry ll of France and Diana of Poitiers" (detalle / detail)

"- Michelet.

Henry II, though not of a cruel disposition, was induced by anger and wounded pride to join in the persecution of the Protestants through being brought in contact with one of his own domestics, whose resistance provoked his hatred to Protestantism.
The man chosen for this experiment by Diana of Poitiers and the Cardinal of Lorraine was a workman employed by the king’s tailor. This unfortunate man being brought into the King’s presence, defended his religious principles with great firmness and dignity, and interrupting Diana as she advanced to make a remark, he exclaimed, “Madam, rest satisfied with having infected France with your infamy, but touch not those things which appertain to God.” The King at these words, furious beyond control, swore he would see him burnt alive.
Henry was present at the execution, but was so overcome that he was obliged to leave the window. The martyr, enduring the horrible suffering with the greatest courage and firmness, kept his eyes fixed upon the King, who, horror-stricken and terrified, fied[sic], saying that never again would he witness so horrible a sight.” — Michelet.
