Paula Varona [Pintura / Painting]

Paula Varona

Madrillian nights are open for all… no point for defensive social barriers

Galicia. "Gigante en Fisterra / Giant at Fisterra", 46 x 33 cm.

Madrid. "Oficina del Alcalde / Mayor´s Office", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 125 x 150 cm.

"Giraldilla Club", 60 x 120 cm.

Madrid. "Cúpula brillante / Shiny Dome", pastel sobre cartón / pastel on cardboard, 23.6 x 11,8

"Con la mirada hacia África / With the look towards Africa"
Óleo sobre cartón / oil on cardboard, 120 x 180 cm.

Madrid. "Luz y sonido / Light And Sound"
Pastel sobre cartón / pastel on cardboard, 116 x 81 cm.
Día de partido en el Santiago Bernabeu. La ciudad exuda un aire de optimismo /
Santiago Bernabeu game day. The city exudes an air of optimism.

Madrid. "Brillo majestuoso / Magestic Glow", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 14,8" x 21,3"
After the bank crisis of 2007… the bank district of Madrid still glows.

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 200 x 140 cm.
At the entrance of Havana Bay you can find this giant lighthouse… A Cyclops with a sense of comfort for Spanish mariners, during centuries.

Paula Varona was born in Málaga in 1963, and spent her first years in Cádiz, between Tarifa and San Fernando. At age 16 she went to London, where she finished high school and began his studies in art, first Foundation Course of the Heatherly School of Art, and then the Degree of Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art, Saint Martins School of Art, until 1988
«I traveled through Japan and the United States, returning to Spain in 1989 and finally settling in Madrid. I have three children Iñigo, Lucas and Beltrán. The favorite subjects in my painting are two: urban landscapes and the sea. I like cities. They are the maximum expression of human plasticism, they are full of ideas, sensations, play of proportions, contrasts, hidden laws, secret keys. I have painted Lisbon, Havana, New York, Barcelona, and, a lot Madrid.»

La Habana / Havana, Cuba. "Óxido y malva / Rust and Mauve", 46 x 33 cm.
Havana Bay can express the carelessness of old ships under the light of dawn.

«I decide which city to paint through my personal experience in them. Live them, my stories and experiences. All this drives me to paint them. It also influences me and attracts a lot to see the cities as a result of their history. Cities are alive and constantly changing over time. These changes are reflected in my paintings.»

Madrid. "Angel's", 130 x 89 cm.

Madrid. "Encrucijada de Caballero / Knight's Crossroads", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 75 x 150 cm.

«I have a lot of work painted at street level. If the view is from a high point, the sensation is of more freedom, silence, peace, it is as if time stopped. I also like the details of roofs, finish of buildings, and other aspects that can not be enjoyed from the bustle of the street. On the other hand, from the street you enjoy the moment everything that happens in your environment that is constantly changing.»

Madrid. "Efecto urbano / Urban Effect", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 120 x 120 cm.

Madrid. "La hora del lubicán / Lubican's Time", 200 x 160 cm.

«I always start by drawing what I want to paint, then I start with the oils and always let them dry before painting again so that the colors do not mix on the canvas, always on the palette. My palette is my laboratory of colors where I mix and define the lights and shadows before taking them to the canvas, with patience and dedication until the painting is finished.»

Madrid. "Gran vía II / Grand Way II", 170 x 154 cm.

«What attracts me especially of the Gran Vía is that its buildings ask you to paint them. They are as part of a large theater stage. Its buildings are emblematic and iconic. At the same time, life on the street represents the reality of what street people are like in Madrid.»

Madrid. "Blanco y negro / Black And White"

Madrid. "Azimut de siluetas / Azimuth of Silhouettes", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 60 cm.
Mediodía en un día soleado de invierno madrileño / Noon in sunny winter Madrillian day.

«What I really notice is the change in my way of seeing and perceiving it. After many years of painting the city, my eyes have changed, and has become something more abstract, cleaner, while still being a realistic vision of Madrid.»

Madrid. "Despidiendo el invierno / Saying Goodbye to Winter", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas

Madrid. "Tensión Intangible II / Intangible tension II", 150 x 100 cm.

Madrid. "Cielo despejado de julio / July Clear Sky", 45 x 100 cm.
