Uruguayos / Uruguayans (XXXII) - Armando Bergallo (III) (Artes escénicas / Performing Arts)

In this third post (previously here and here) dedicated to the work of the Uruguayan artist born in Montevideo (1942), based in France, Armando Bergallo, we take a look at his incursions into the performing arts. After his cinematographic experiences in the beginning of the seventies, with the production of the film "Las semillas de la aurora / The Seeds of Dawn", with the Taller Montevideo, and "Shooting Smoothly", with the Film Group Holland, Bergallo worked since 1977 in the creation of contemporary operas with the Taller Amsterdam. This creative development led to Salomé, a work in whose stage space the artist simultaneously develops his plastic activity in front of the audience, inspired by the music, the performers and the development of the piece. The result is, as Bergallo says, a metaphor for artistic creation. Then came Alice and Gulliver, completing a unique autobiographical operatic trilogy.

Armando Bergallo, The Dessert, Berlín, 1983

In 1971, Taller de Montevideo (founded by four disciples of the workshop of Torres Garcia: Armando Bergallo, Gorki Bollar, Clara Scremini y Héctor Vilche) produced LAS SEMILLAS DE LA AURORA, a film focuses the social-political panorama of Latin America with an emphasis on the situation of Uruguay in the seventies.

"Disparando suavemente / Shooting Smoothly", film, 1973

«Since 1977 I have worked with Taller Amsterdam in the creation of contemporary operas, Vilche and I were the authors and directors. Parallel to this we continued individually painting, sculpting and creating installations. My need to experience new disciplines led me to enter, as a performer, in the stage spaces of Taller Amsterdam.»

"La cité transparente / La ciudad transparente / The transparent city", Centre Georges Pompidou,1979

"El desierto / The Desert", Festival d’Automne, Paris, 1982

«LA CITÉ TRANSPARENTE marks the passage between the Cronus series and the world of spectacle, which leads us finally into the creation of contemporary operas. Significantly this work was called at the same time CRONUS 11 and LA CITÉ TRANSPARENTE.
Vilche and I then commenced working on an autobiography 'at two'. The result was the trilogy THE DESERT [travelling into memory], LA NUIT DU TROISIÈME JOUR [the vital energy of eroticism] and PROGRESS PASSION [society, justice].
In this period, Vilche and I worked with artists from different disciplines: composers, musical directors, stage designer, choreographers, sound and lighting technicians, singers, actors, dancers and of course technicians plus organisers and the members of the Taller Amsterdam Foundation. The talent, energy and work of all these people have made possible the ambitious artistic adventure of  the Taller.»

"La nuit du troisième Jour / La noche del tercer día / The Night of the Third Day", Créteil, Paris, 1984

«Inspired by my painting about the Salome by Caravaggio I created this baroque installation SALOMÉ. During the presentation a soprano intervenes, interpreting a text that I wrote about Salome, a fascinating character, to whom I will return again and again until the creation of my opera SALOMÉ in 2007.»

«SATYRICON, opera composed by Bruno Maderna, marked the first time that Taller Amsterdam performed an already existing opera. Normally Vilche and I wrote the text, contacted composers, musicians, stage designer, choreographers and finally we realized the direction of the spectacle.»

«MARÍA DE BUENOS AIRES, composed by Astor Piazzola, which was the last big production of Taller Amsterdam. This opera was commissioned by the City of The Hague for the celebration of the new Millennium.
An emotional experience of this production was to share the role of the Duende with Juan Carlos Moretti, a great man of theatre and friend of childhood.»

"Salomé la Mére, La Fille / Salomé la madre, la hija / Salome the mother, the daughter"
Acrílico sobre tela / acrylic on canvas, 100 x 100 cm., 2006

«In 2005 I wrote an autobiographical text that in 2007 took the form of the opera SALOMÉ. This poetic text is a double story that speaks of boundless passion of Salome and the story of my own passion felt and lived when I was nine years old.
The music of Salomé was composed and interpreted by international musicians, singers and actors. My staging of SALOMÉ was presented in 2007 and in 2009 in Milan. During each performance I painted in front of the audience, a canvas of ten meters by two. The emotion, the energy transmitted by the music and the interpreters inspired me every time to a new artwork. In this way SALOMÉ is really a metaphor of the artistic creation.»

"Alicia / Alice", 2009

"Gulliver", ópera, Espace culturel Georges Brassens, Léognan, 2009

"Gulliver", acrílico sobre tela / acrylic on canvas, 120 x 100 cm., 2009-10

"Gulliver", 2010

«Between the two presentations of SALOME in Milan, I wrote a new text about another mythical character ALICE. We are all Alice and so we are going to enter the rabbit hole that leads us into a magical real world. We can relive encounters with monsters, angels, elves, the whole range of human emotions and finally love and friendship.
ALICE is the second part of an autobiographical trilogy announcing the next step that will be the story of a painter GULLIVER.
My system is always to start with visual art creations, which will inspire the artists, technicians and future participants who will give life to the performance.
The installation ALICE ROOM is an example of this method of work.»

«As part of the imaginary of infinity I felt the need to install the mythical characters of my projects HERCULE, ORFEO, SALOMÉ and ALICE in a landscape that continues without limit.»

"Alicia / Alice", 2012
