On May 18 is the birthday of

Isabel "Chavela" Villasenor, Mexican painter and sculptor born in Guadalajara in 1909.
She was a student of sculpture during the period between 1928 and 1930 in the Centro Popular of Painting "Santiago Rebull" in Mexico City, under the tutelage of Gabriel Fernandez Ledesma. A year later he painted a mural in Hidalgo and the same year in the National Library of Mexico and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, along with the group of revolutionary artists "30-30". Her sculptures are made of metal and wood. The death of her son in 1934 in also reflected in her work. Later she gave birth to a daughter named Olinca. Villaseñor died of a heart attack in 1953.

Alain Bonnefoit, French painter and sculptor born in 1937 in Montmartre, Paris. He has studios in Paris and Florence.
In 1950s Alain Bonnefoit studied in Paris at the School of Applied Arts (1953-1955) and the School of Fine Arts (1956-1957). He later moved to Brussels to study engraving and sculpture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1959-1960). Back in Paris in 1962, he studied with Antoniucci Volti that influenced him in his taste for the portrait of the female body.
In 1963 traveled to Tuscany, a place that deeply impressed him, and he decided to open his second studio there. Since then he has lived part of the year in Florence.
He has exhibited in France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, USA, Tahiti, Korea and Japan.

On May 19 is the birthday of

Jacob Jordaens, Flemish  baroque painter born in Amberes in 1593. He died in 1678.
I refer to the previous post for more information and images.

Ion Jalea, Romanian sculptor, titular member of the Romanian Academy.
Born in 1887 in the little town of Casimcea, Tulcea county, Ion Jalea studied first at The School of Arts and Crafts (in Romanian, Școala de Arte și Meserii) and then at the Academy of Beaux Arts (Academia de Arte Frumoase) in București, where he was the pupil of the renowned Romanian sculptors Frederik Storck and Dimitrie Paciurea. The final touch of his artistic education was given in Paris at the Académie Julian, with the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle.
During World War One, Ion Jalea was part of the Romanian Army and fought in a series of battles. He was severely wounded and lost his left arm that had to be amputated next to the shoulder. After recuperating, despite being an amputee, he continued to dedicate his life to sculpture, as he did before. He became a well known sculptor by working with his right arm only and his greatest achievements were after he lost his arm. He died in 1983.

On May 20 is the birthday of

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Deyneka (Алекса́ндр Алекса́ндрович Дейне́ка), Russian painter, graphic artist and sculptor born in 1899. Thought to be one of the most important modernist figurative painters of the first half of the XXth century
Deyneka studied at the Kharkov Art College. He was founder of groups such as OST and Oktyabr, and his work was featured in major exhibitions. In his paintings depicts scenes gender, labor and sports, although his most iconic works are "The Defense of Petrograd" (1928) and "The Battle of Sebastopol" (1942). He died in 1969.

Johann Gottfried Schadow, German sculptor born in 1764.
His first teacher was the sculptor Tassaert, patronized by Frederick the Great; the master offered his daughter in marriage, but the pupil preferred to elope with a girl to Vienna, and the father-in-law -the Viennese jeweler Samuel Devidels- not only condoned the offence but furnished money wherewith to visit Italy. Three years' study in Rome formed his style, and in 1788 he returned to Berlin to succeed Tassaert as sculptor to the court and secretary to the Academy. Over half a century he produced upwards of two hundred works, varied in style as in subjects.
Among his ambitious efforts are Frederick the Great in Stettin, Blücher in Rostock and Luther in Wittenberg. His portrait statues include Frederick the Great playing the flute, and the crown-princess Louise and her sister Frederica. His busts, of which there are more than one hundred, include seventeen colossal heads in the Walhalla, Ratisbon; Goethe, Wieland, and Fichte were modelled from life. He died in Berlin in 1950.

On May 21 is the birthday of

Albrecht Dürer, the most famous artist of the German Rennaissance, born in Nürembert in 1471. He died in 1528.
I refer to the previous posts for more information and images.

Henri Julien Félix Rousseau, French Post-Impressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner born in 1844. He was also known as Le Douanier (the customs officer), a humorous description of his occupation as a toll collector. Ridiculed during his lifetime, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality.
His best known paintings depict jungle scenes, even though he never left France or saw a jungle. Stories spread by admirers that his army service included the French expeditionary force to Mexico are unfounded. His inspiration came from illustrated books and the botanical gardens in Paris, as well as tableaux of taxidermied wild animals. He had also met soldiers during his term of service who had survived the French expedition to Mexico, and he listened to their stories of the subtropical country they had encountered. To the critic Arsène Alexandre, he described his frequent visits to the Jardin des Plantes: "When I go into the glass houses and I see the strange plants of exotic lands, it seems to me that I enter into a dream." He died in 1910.

On May 22 is the birthday of

Hubert Robert, French painter and engraver born in 1733, specialized in landscape paintings and classical ruins. He knew the height of the reign of Louis XVI, whom he served in various positions including garden design. He miraculously survived to be executed during the French Revolution and was one of the advisers of the newly founded Louvre.
Entrepreneur and prolific, Robert also acted in a similar to what is now an art director, creating the concept of stylish ruined gardens for several aristocratic customers. He died in 1808.

Félix Henri Bracquemond, French painter and etcher.
He was trained in early youth as a trade lithographer, until Guichard, a pupil of Ingres, took him to his studio. His portrait of his grandmother, painted by him at the age of nineteen, attracted Théophile Gautier's attention at the Salon. He applied himself to engraving and etching about 1853, and played a leading and brilliant part in the revival of the etcher's art in France. Altogether he produced over eight hundred plates, comprising portraits, landscapes, scenes of contemporary life, and bird-studies, besides numerous interpretations of other artist's paintings, especially those of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, Gustave Moreau and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. After having been attached to the Sèvres porcelain factory in 1870, he accepted a post as art manager of the Paris atelier of the firm of Haviland of Limoges.
Bracquemond was a prominent figure in artistic and literary circles in the second half of the 19th century. He died in Sèvres in 1914.

On May 23 is the birthday of

August von Kreling, painter, illustrator and sculptor born in Osnabrück in 1819. He died in 1876.
I refer to the previous posts for more information and images.

James (Jean-Jacques) Pradier, Swiss-born (1790) French sculptor best known for his work in the neoclassical style.
Born in Geneva, Pradier left for Paris in 1807 to work with his elder brother, Charles-Simon Pradier, an engraver. He won a Prix de Rome that enabled him to study in Rome from 1814 to 1818. He studied under Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres in Paris. In 1827 he became a member of the Académie des beaux-arts and a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pradier oversaw the finish of his sculptures himself. He was a friend of the Romantic poets Alfred de Musset, Victor Hugo, Théophile Gautier, and the young Gustave Flaubert, and his atelier was a center, presided over by his beautiful mistress, Juliette Drouet, who became Hugo's mistress in 1833.
The cool neoclassical surface finish of his sculptures is charged with an eroticism that their mythological themes can barely disguise. At the Salon of 1834, Pradier's Satyr and Bacchante created a scandalous sensation. Pradier died in 1852.

Today, May 24, is the birthday of

Joaquín Vaquero Turcios, Spanish painter and sculptor born in Asturias in 1933, who spent his childhood in Oviedo. He started painting very young with his father and soon participated in group exhibitions. In 1950 the family moved to Rome where he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Rome. Besides frescoes, as the mural powerhouse Grandas in Asturias, the mural "Orfeo" at the Teatro Real in Madrid, or, to quote the last, mural painting of the Prince of Asturias Auditorium in Oviedo, Turcios also experimented with printmaking, concrete and steel. His work is displayed in many museums, national and international institutions. He died in 2010.

Alexei Kondratyevich Savrasov (Алексе́й Кондра́тьевич Савра́сов), Russian landscape painter born in 1830. He was the creator of the lyrical landscape style.
He began to draw early and in 1838 he enrolled as a student of professor Rabus at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (graduated in 1850), and immediately began to specialize in landscape painting.
In 1852, he traveled to Ukraine. Then, in 1854 by the invitation of the Grand Duchess Maria Nikolayevna, President of the Imperial Academy of Arts, he moved to the neighborhood of St. Petersburg. In 1857, Savrasov became a teacher at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
The Rooks Have Come Back (1871) is considered by many critics to be the high point in Savrasov’s artistic career.
He died in 1897.
