"Chicos sobre sacas de lana / Boys on sacks of wool", Malheur County, Oregon, 1941. The Red List

"Swanism of Leda" © 2013 Uldus Bakhtiozina.
Conjured Life series. Inspired with the legend about Leda. Analogue from May 2016
Leda was admired by Zeus, who seduced her in the guise of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. Their consummation, on the same night as Leda lay with her husband Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs from which hatched Helen, Clytemnestra, and Castor and Pollux.
Swan is real. Healthy and happy.

"The Soul of the Forest" © 2013 Uldus Bakhtiozina.
Russ Land series. Analogue from October 2014
The Forest has a special place in all Slavic Fairy Tales. It helps to heroes, some can even have the conversation with Forest. Pagans believed the Forest has the Soul and prayed to the God of Forest.

"Colors of Pink Water"
Bathrobes Off-Vinatge, Headpieces by Uldus. Analogue from June 2016.
The power of femininity, that part of the world that ruled by the feminine, the very thing that even we, the women, a little afraid, sometimes hiding or veiling under the modern demands, always fired my mind to create a visualization of that force. What if we ignore present time, requirements of modern life and imagine femininity as the embodiment of freedom and rejection of prejudices, without malice and envy, without depending on the anticipated by ourselves male expectations, when the body is released simultaneously with the mind and if knows the corridors of entities Hesse’s Steppenwolf, seeking to know own self to the very depth. This desire is like escapism, my heroes exist in the visual short interval, they are fictitious, as the essence of a plurality of myself and every woman.

Textos en inglés / English translation

On July 17 is the birthday of

Franz Christian (F.C.) Gundlach, German photographer, gallery owner, collector, and curator born in 1926 in Heinebach, Hesse. Since September 2003 he is founding director of the House of Photography in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg.
His fashion photographs of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, which have repeatedly dealt with social phenomena and current trends in the visual arts, have often become icons, left behind their own contexts and found their way into museums and collections. Since 1975 he has, first in the PPS. Galerie F. C. Gundlach, later on for many Hamburg and Berlin museums, internationally acclaimed photographic exhibitions. On the occasion of the reopening of the redesigned House of Photography, he curated the retrospective of the Hungarian photographer Martin Munkácsi in April 2005, most recently the exhibitions More Than Fashion for the Moscow House of Photography and Vanity for the Kunsthalle Wien 2011. His collection of photographic works under the title Das Bild des Menschen in der Photographie is one of the most important private photographs of Germany and is available to the House of Photography as a permanent loan.
"As a fashion photographer who uses the recording medium for his productions, the photographer has to live, think and feel in his time. Fashion photographs are always interpretations and productions. They reflect and visualize the temporal spirit of the present and anticipate that of tomorrow. They offer projection surfaces for identification, but also for dreams, desires and longings. And yet fashion photographs are more about a time when documentary photographs claiming to have portrayed reality." F.C. Gundlach

* F.C. Gundlach died on July 23th, 2021

On July 18 is the birthday of

Allan Amato, American portrait and fashion photographer and American film director born in 1974.
In 2005, Amato was working in advertising in New Orleans, but changed his career path after Hurricane Katrina forced him to relocate. Amato was evacuated to Houston, where he bought his lighting and camera equipment.
«Allan Amato’s cosmic camera sees through mortal skin to reveal the lambent ideal self beneath. Where Amato aims his lens, gods and superheroes, angels and demons are conjured; vinyl mythologies are summoned; mere flesh becomes dreamscape and deluxe collage where everything, especially the grotesque, is beautiful. Alchemist of light and composition, distiller of Platonic gold from leaden flesh, Renaissance futurist and musclebound death machine to boot; Allan Amato is easily my favorite photographer.»
— Grant Morrison

On July 19 is the birthday of

Ulrich Mack, German photographer born in Glasehausen, Eichsfeld, in 1934.
In 1945, he fled from Thorn (West Prussia). From 1953 to 1955 he worked as a miner in the Gedinge and visited the Oberschule. Between 1956 and 1962 he studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts with Alfred Mahlau (painting) and Eberhard Troeger (photography). During the semester holidays he worked as a fisherman in Spain and woodcutter in Sweden.
In 1962 he worked as a freelance photographer, but a year later he became a photojournalist of the magazine "Quick" in Munich from 1963 to 1967 and also for "twen", under the art director Willy Fleckhaus. During the time, Mack portrayed numerous well-known writers, politicians, artists and musicians. His international breakthrough was in 1964 with the image essay on wild horses in Kenya, published in "twen" under the title Mondo Cavallo. For this he received the first prize at the World Press Photo Award in the category Most Artistic Press Photo. In 1967 he started working for "Stern" in Hamburg. From 1973 he worked as a freelance photographer in Hamburg, produced films for the NDR and made advertising.
He began his teaching activities at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences in 1975, and the professorship took place one year later. Until 1999, he was Professor of Visual Communication. In 1977, he founded the summer academy in the Abbaye du Gard near Amiens, France. Until 2001 there were annual courses under his direction, with many representatives of the then photography scene.
In 1978 he began his long-term documentation about Pellworm, his landscape and his people. This resulted in the series "Quiet Far Distance", landscapes in the dye transfer process. It was followed in 1984 by an artist's release (Sabbatical), which Mack spent eight months on Harker's Island, North Carolina, with the aim of supplementing the study begun on Pellworm with a counterpart in the USA. The resulting comparative work resulted in migrating exhibitions in Germany and the USA. In 1988, he was a guest professor at Boston University at the College of Communication. In 1993 he drew up an extensive documentation about the Holm, a traditional fishing village on the outskirts of Schleswig. In 1995, 1997 and 1999 he was Artist in Residence at Boston University.
Ulrich Mack lives with his wife Katrin in Hamburg.

On July 20 is the birthday of

Fabian Rosofsky, Argentine photographer born in Buenos Aires in 1960.
From childhood he felt a strong attraction for photography but only in 1987 began to study at the professional level under Atilio Rodríguez in the House of Youth, San Isidro. From there on, he has devoted all his time to his passion aroused in his first years of life.

On July 21 is the birthday of

Russell Lee, American photographer and photojournalist born in 1903 in Ottawa, Illinois.
He earned a degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
He gave up an excellent position as a chemist to become a painter. Originally he used photography as a precursor to his painting, but soon became interested in photography for its own sake, recording the people and places around him. Among his earliest subjects were Pennsylvanian bootleg mining and the Father Divine cult.
In the fall of 1936, during the Great Depression, Lee was hired for the federally sponsored Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographic documentation project of the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration. He joined a team assembled under Roy Stryker, along with Dorothea Lange, Arthur Rothstein and Walker Evans. Stryker provided direction and bureaucratic protection to the group, leaving the photographers free to compile what in 1973 was described as "the greatest documentary collection which has ever been assembled." Lee created some of the iconic images produced by the FSA, including photographic studies of San Augustine, Texas in 1939, and Pie Town, New Mexico in 1940. Over the spring and summer of 1942, Lee was one of several government photographers to document the eviction of Japanese Americans from the West Coast, producing over 600 images of families waiting to be removed and their later life in various detention facilities.
After the FSA was defunded in 1943, Lee served in the Air Transport Command (ATC), during which he took photographs of all the airfield approaches used by the ATC to supply the Armed Forces in World War II. He worked for the United States Department of the Interior (DOI) in 1946 and 1947, helping the agency compile a medical survey in the communities involved in mining bituminous coal. He created over 4,000 photographs of miners and their working conditions in coal mines.
While completing the DOI work, Lee also continued to work under Stryker, producing public relations photographs for Standard Oil of New Jersey. Some 80,000 of those photographs have been donated by Exxon Corporation to the University of Louisville in Kentucky.
In 1947 Lee moved to Austin, Texas and continued photography. In 1965 he became the first instructor of photography at the University of Texas.
He died in 1986.
