_________________________________________________________

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 88 x 75 cm., 1905. Sotheby's

"Interior con mujer leyendo / Interior With Woman Reading"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 85 x 66 cm., 1896. Lempertz

"Madre, hija y abuela cosiendo / Mother, daughter and granddaughter knitting"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 71 x 78,8 cm., 1995-97. Bonhams

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 80 x 100 cm., 1993. Peintures Congo

"Tendre Jeunesse / Tierna juventud / Tender Youth"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 100 x 80 cm., 1993. Peintures Congo

"La Belle Antoinette / La bella Antonieta / The Beautiful Antoinette"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 105 x 90 cm., 1994. Peintures Congo

"Congelado y descongelado / Freeze and Thaw", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 137 x 92 cm.

"Borrasca inminente / Coming Squall", óleo / oil, 122 x 61 cm.

"Para el mar solitario y el cielo / To the Lonely Sea and Sky", óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 165 x 155 cm.,

"Autorretrato / Self Portrait", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 138 x 110 cm., 1862.

He moved with his family to Copenhagen in 1871. He first studied painting under Vilhelm Kyhn before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1877 to 1883. Thereafter he studied under P.S. In the 1880s, he painted mainly landscapes but from the 1890s, he became one of Denmark's most popular portraitists, creating especially artistic paintings of members of his family. Under the influence of Vilhelm Hammershøi, his interiors with a dark female figure in pink, grey and brownish hues testify to his simple, aesthetic approach. One of his most appreciated works is Drømmeviduet (The Dream Window), an oil painting of a maid peering out of one of the windows in Liselund Slot, painted in 1903.
He died in Frederiksberg in 1912.

On July 24 is the birthday of

Lema Kusa, well-known graphic artist and painter from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, born in Kinkenge in 1994.
He was educated at the Protestant school of pastors and teachers in Kimpese. In 1958 he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa to study advertising painting and illustrations. After seven years he was awarded a diploma and a scholarship to study graphic arts at the Saint-Luc Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Liège, Belgium. He also took courses at the Liege Graduate School of Business and was a visiting student at the University of Louvain's Institute of Political and Social Science. He then completed his professional development through work in the University of Louvain External Relations department, the Inter Marco Publicem and Publisynthèse advertising agencies in Brussels, and the printers Mambourg in Liege, Acobel in Brussels and Agfa-Gevaert in Mortsel.
As soon as he returned to Zaire, Lema Kusa took the position of professor and head of advertising of the newly formed Academy of Fine Arts (l'Académie des Beaux-Arts). At the same time he became head of the drawing studio for the leading advertising agency in Congo, then in 1974 launched his own agency, "Design Promotion". From 1981 he was deputy section chief in charge of teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts. He also became CEO of the National Institute of Arts, Kinshasa, a position he was holding in 2008 while also a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
In his spare time from his different jobs Lema Kusa created strong and moral paintings. He painted drunks, prostitutes, market figures, beggars and idlers with a strong expressionist palette and a distinctive and subtle humor. His paintings are often symbolic and sometimes abstract. Although highly original, his paintings always show the desire to please the public derived from his training in advertising. He has said of his paintings of women that if God created woman last, he must then have found perfection. He paints women as happy, beautiful and opulent, with their beauty providing a doorway for entering into the mystery of creation.
His work has been shown at numerous exhibitions.

On July 25 is the birthday of

Bernard Meninsky, painter of figures and landscape in oils, watercolour and gouache, draughtsman and teacher born in Ukraine in 1891.
The family moved to Liverpool whilst Menisky was a baby. He attended the Liverpool School of Art from 1906 after initially attending evening classes in art. He won the King’s Medal in 1911 and went on to study briefly at Royal College of Art in London and the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1913 he worked for Edward Gordon Craig at his theatre school in Florence, later returning to teach at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where he taught painting and drawing from 1913 until 1940.
During World War I, Meninsky served in the Royal Fusiliers, fighting with General Edmund Allenby in Palestine. The Ministry of Information commissioned Meninsky in May 1918 to produce a series of paintings based around the 'arrival of a Leave Train from the Front' at a London railway terminus. He was naturalised as a British Citizen in 1918 but had a nervous breakdown and was discharged from service after six months as a Ministry of Information war artist.
He held his first solo show at the Goupil Gallery in 1919 along with The London Group and the New English Art Club (NEAC). In 1920 he was appointed as a tutor of life drawing at the Westminster School of Art, where he was renowned as a superb figure draughtsman. On July 28 is the birthday of

Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov (Алекса́ндр Андре́евич Ива́нов), Russian painter born in 1806 (July 16 [OS]) who adhered to the waning tradition of Neoclassicism but found little sympathy with his contemporaries.
Ivanov studied together with Karl Briullov at the Imperial Academy of Arts under his father, Andrey Ivanovich Ivanov. He spent most of his life in Rome where he befriended Gogol and was influenced by the Nazarenes. He has been called the master of one work, for it took 20 years to complete his magnum opus, The Appearance of Christ Before the People (1837–57), now in the Tretyakov Gallery at Moscow.
Critical judgement about Ivanov improved in the following generation. Some of the numerous sketches he had prepared for The Appearance have been recognized as masterpieces in their own right. The most comprehensive collection of his works can be viewed at the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
He died in 1858.

On July 29 is the birthday of

Francesco Mochi, Italian early-Baroque sculptor born in Montevarchi in 1580, active mostly in Rome and Orvieto.
His early training was with the anti-Mannerist Florentine painter Santi di Tito, where he formed a taste for pictorial clarity and the primacy of disegno, exemplified in the sculpture of Giambologna and his studio and followers. He moved to Rome around 1599 and continued his training in the studio of the Venetian-trained sculptor Camillo Mariani. Mochi was a contemporary of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's father, Pietro, as well as later with the son.
Mochi worked with Stefano Maderno on a prominent papal commission, the Cappella Paolina in Santa Maria Maggiore, where he contributed his still somewhat immature Saint Matthew and the Angel, in travertine. His first major work was the Annunciation of the Virgin by the Angel, composed of two statues (the Angel completed 1605, the Virgin Annunciate, 1608, Orvieto, Museo dell'Opera del Duomo). "A fanfare raising sculpture from its slumber", as Rudolph Wittkower called it, it prefigures the baroque with its restrained emotiveness.
Mochi was one of the few seventeenth-century sculptors who was also a master bronze-caster. He made two masterly equestrian bronze statues of Ranuccio and Alessandro Farnese in Piazza Cavalli, Piacenza. Ranuccio Farnese, 1612–20, and Alessandro Farnese, 1620–29, are among the high points of his career.
He returned from Piacenza to Rome, where he found Bernini fully in charge of major commissions, and a current fully developed Baroque style with which Mochi was now out of touch. His late Roman works are the Christ Receiving Baptism (1635 or later, Ponte Mello, Rome); Taddeus (1641–44, Orvieto), and Saints Peter and Paul (1638–52, Porta del Popolo), and Saint Martha for the Barberini family chapel at Sant'Andrea della Valle (1609–1621).
He died in 1654.

He has also introduced a new generation of young readers to the works of great Australian poets CJ Dennis and Ethel Turner though his illustrated versions of their work.
Since 2001, Gouldthorpe has returned to landscape painting, often working en plein air. He has held several solo shows at Colville Street Art Gallery. He has been a three-time finalist in the Glover Prize, winning the People’s Choice Award in 2010.
Gouldthorpe's work appears in many other areas, including murals, stamps, advertising, film, television and live performance. Several of his murals, employing the Trompe-l'œil technique, can be seen around the streets and businesses of Hobart.

Today, July 31, is the birthday of

Manuel Ocaranza, distinguished Mexican painter and poet born in 1841 in Uruapan, Michoacán. He was one of the best painters of the XIX century as well as of the most influential in the painting in Cuba. Much of his work has remained in that country. During the French invasion in Mexico, along with Eduardo Ruiz, Antonio Mercado and other figures of that time, played an important repel the forces of the French army in Michoacán.
Challenging the mythological allegories, he made innovations in the techniques to produce textures incorporating different types of fabrics as canvases, which allowed him to create new forms of the known characters, leading him to enter the academy of San Carlos in 1861 where he would integrate as Student and teacher.
His style framed in the romanticism has a huge tendency to costumbrismo, reason why will be the base of the study for many artists of that time, something that served to show his work in several exhibitions in Paris.
On his return he set up a gallery for the so-called Academicians of San Carlos, showing his work, whose poetry would amicably unite him with José Martí, with whom he maintained a close relationship that inspired him to paint the paintings entitled "El Lino Roto" "Flower Wilt", "Rose Poisoned" and others.
He died suddenly in 1882, at 41 years of age, because of a cardio-pulmonary complication, caused by an epidemic of cholera of which he was victim. His last work was "The coffee cup of Uruapán"
