"Tamazul", acuarela sobre papel / watercolor on paper, 57 x 76,5 cm., 1977.

"Autorretrato con pájaro / Self Portrait With a Bird"
Aguada y pan de oro sobre papel / gouache and gold leaf on paper, 1975. Casa Chihuahua

"Dialogo entre Dos Mujeres / Dialogue between Two Women"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 39" x 47", c.1966. AMA
Collection OAS Art Museum of the Americas

"Los Mudos / The Dumb Ones", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 60 x 80 cm., 1975. The Saleroom

"Almiares en el campo danés / Haystacks in a Field in Denmark"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 28 x 43 cm., 1985. The Saleroom

On July 16 is the birthday of

Vasily Alexeyevich Kafanov (Василий Алексеевич Кафанов), Russian painter and illustrator born in Moscow in 1952.
After finishing school, he was in the Soviet Far East, Kuril Islands, serving in the ranks of the Soviet Armed Forces from 1970 to 1972. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Art and started his life as a graphic artist and an illustrator. Later on, he graduated from Advanced School of Cinematography and created four short cartoons at the Soyuzmultfilm studio.
Kafanov used to paint traditional oils on canvas and sometimes on wood panels. Later on, his drawing began to feature a large fish, which popped up in a variety of very strange settings, carrying small chapels and towers on its back. Nowadays, he uses rapidograph and black Japanese ink on acrylic for his paintings, using bright primary colors. He also worked on ceramics, welding, sculpture and artifacts concerning alchemy.
Throughout his career, Kafanov has been inspired by the paintings of prominent artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Mikhail Shemyakin and Giorgio Morandi. In 1990, Kafanov emigrated to America and started living in New York. His first exhibition in the United States was in the summer of 1990 in San Francisco.
He used to work as illustrator for The New York Times. In the late 1990s, he met Billy Corgan, the lead singer of the alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins and later was offered to create the cover of their 2000 release Machina, which he believes is one of his best works in his entire career.

On July 17 is the birthday of

Francisco Benjamín López Toledo, Mexican painter, sculptor, and graphic artist born in 1940. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Oaxaca and the Centro Superior de Artes Aplicadas del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico, where he studied graphic arts with Guillermo Silva Santamaria.
His social and cultural concerns about his home state led to his participation in the establishment of an art library at the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO), as well as his involvement in the founding of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca (MACO), the Patronato Pro-Defensa y Conservación del Patrimonio Cultural de Oaxaca, a library for the blind, a photographic center, and the Eduardo Mata Music Library. Toledo works in various media, including pottery, sculpture, weaving, graphic arts, and paintings. He has had exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Japan, Sweden, the United States, as well as other countries.
He is considered one of the greatest living artists in Mexico, with wide international recognition. His art reflects a great appreciation for the aesthetics of nature, particularly that of animals that are not conventionally associated with beauty such as monkeys, bats, iguanas, frogs and insects. In his sculpture he has two forms of expression, one where he represents things of the natural world, specifically bestiaries of different animals and another in which he totally detached himself from reality. "Forge, thus, a universe that ties together with the real and, simultaneously, unfolds the metaphor." The latter is seen in his work thanks to the fact that it represents human figures and other animals in a form of mating either explicit or symbolic. The moral vision of Toledo affirms that the world of humans and the world of animals are one with nature.

On July 18 is the birthday of

Gaston Orellana, Spanish painter born in Valparaiso, Chile in 1933.
He studied Fine Art at the Escuela Experimental de Educación Artistica Santiago, Chile. He then continued his studies at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Viña del Mar and perfectioned his skill with the violin at the Conservatorio de Música within the same school. In 1954, Orellana meets Pablo Neruda, establishing an intense relationship that was to last until the death of the poet. This friendship was to greatly affect Orellana, to whom the poet dedicated the poem "Recibimiento" in 1966, praising "what lies in the work/ of Orellana/ is as alive/ as a life, as secure as/ an object, as mysterious/ as a stone."
In his earliest works, Orellana shows some of the signs that were to become the Neo-figuration, with expressive and yet undefined figures. Orellana's works from this period are distinguished for their almost monochromatic nature, where most figures appear in black and grayscale, to the point that, even though there is a predominant use of oxides and sand, they had an almost watercoulour appearance.
In 1964, Orellana participates in the opening exhibition of the Juana Mordó Gallery, in Madrid, Spain, with whom he was to establish a long-lasting business relationship.[2] In the following year, he moves to New York, even though he continued to travel extensively to Spain, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. New York proved to be a melting pot of artistic creation that greatly encouraged the artist through its lively artistic scene. In 1966 he started a thriving business relationship with the New York dealer Martha Jackson who introduced him to the movement that was to result in the historic exhibition at the MOMA "The New Image of Man". In 1969, with the poet Allen Ginsberg and other artists, he participates in numerous protests against the Vietnam war.
In 1970 he represents Spain at the XXV Venice Biennale. The paintings from the period 1970-79 are most remarkable for the vividness of the extreme violence and even the human denigration that is often depicted. Such representations are however, also rich in a lyrical content that was to characterise the artist from then on.
Orellana moved back to Europe in 1984, when he lived between his studio in Madrid, Spain, Albisola, Italy. In 1985 he left the other studios, and moved to Riva del Garda, Italy, where he was to enjoy an incredibly prolific artistic period.
Christian Stein, at the gates of the Spanish Pavilion at the 1995 Venice Biennale, declared that "Orellana is the most interesting artist that Spain has created since Tàpies and Miró".

On July 19 is the birthday of

Louise Christiane Ravn-Hansen, Danish landscape painter and etcher born in Copenhagen, in 1849.
She lost both parents when she was eight and was adopted by her uncle, Niels Frederik Hansen, a cloth merchant. She received her first art instruction from the flower painter, Emma Mulvad (1838-1903). From 1872 to 1876, she studied at the "Painting School for Women", operated by Vilhelm Kyhn. In the summer, she made drawings of the statues and reliefs at the Royal Cast Collection and, for a time, took private lessons from Jørgen Roed.
During this time, she also began painting en plein aire. In 1877, she had her first showing of landscapes at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition and became a regular participant for the rest of her life. She also had showings at the Nordic Exhibition of 1888 and the Glaspalast (Munich) in 1899, among others.
In 1888, along with 22 other female artists, including Marie Luplau, Emilie Mundt and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, she signed a petition to the Rigsdagen demanding that women be admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. That same year saw the establishment of the Royal Academy Art School for Women. Although she helped recruit Viggo Johansen as a teacher there, she was generally not involved in the school.
In 1890, she received a grant from the Raben-Levetzauske Fund, a scientific, educational and cultural fund established by Carl Vilhelm Raben-Levetzau (1789-1870), a major landowner. This enabled her to study in Italy and Germany. She made several trips to Berlin, where she could have her etchings produced at a much higher quality.
She drowned in the Havel River, near Schwanenwerder, on her way to Berlin in 1909; apparently the result of an accident, but the circumstances are unclear.

On July 20 is the birthday of

Max Liebermann, German painter and printmaker born in 1947, and one of the leading proponents of Impressionism in his country.
He first studied law and philosophy at the University of Berlin, but later studied painting and drawing in Weimar in 1869, in Paris in 1872, and in the Netherlands in 1876-77. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), Liebermann served as a medic with the Order of St. John near Metz. After living and working for some time in Munich, he finally returned to Berlin in 1884, where he remained for the rest of his life.
He used his own inherited wealth to assemble an impressive collection of French Impressionist works. He later chose scenes of the bourgeoisie, as well as aspects of his garden near Lake Wannsee, as motifs for his paintings. His work is especially close in spirit to Édouard Manet. In Berlin, he became a famous painter of portraits; He did more than 200 commissioned ones over the years, including of Albert Einstein and Paul von Hindenburg, and also painted himself from time to time.
On the occasion of his 50th birthday, Liebermann was given a solo exhibition at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin, and the following year he was elected to the academy. From 1899 to 1911 he led the premier avant-garde formation in Germany, the Berlin Secession. In his various capacities as a leader in the artistic community, Liebermann spoke out often for the separation of art and politics.
In 1909 Liebermann bought property in Wannsee, a wealthy suburb of summer homes on the outskirts of Berlin, and designed a villa with gardens there. From the 1910s until his death, images of the gardens dominated his work. Liebermann recruited also Lovis Corinth, Ernst Oppler and Max Slevogt for the Berlin Secession, together they were the most famous painters of the German Impressionism.
Beginning in 1920 he was president of the Prussian Academy of Arts. In 1927, Liebermann was celebrated with a large exhibition, declared an honorary citizen of Berlin and hailed in a cover story in Berlin's leading illustrated magazine.
In 1933 he resigned when the academy decided to no longer exhibit works by Jewish artists.
He died in 1935.

On July 21 is the birthday of

Mihai Cotovanu, Romanian painter born in Iassy in 1967.
In 1987-1989 he studied at The Folklore School of Art, Prof. Ghiţă Leonard's class, and during 1990-1995 at the "George Enescu" Art Academy, Faculty of Plastic Art and Design, specialization of Arts' Pedagogy in Prof. Liviu Gonceariuc's class.
He participate in more than 70 collective exhibitions and held more than 60 solo shows in his country and abroad.
He was awarded the first place - Romanian's Song at the Autum Salon, 1988, Academy Award ”C.D. Stahi”, National Art Contest "Nicolae Tonitza", Bârlad, 2006, and Foundation Medal of Arts "St. Luca ", and Naţional Performance Award "Top Art" by "Top Business”, November 2008.
He is a Member of Romanian Union of Plastic Artists Iaşi Subsidiary since 1997.

Today, July 22, is the birthday of

Fernando Soria Pérez, Spanish painter born in Alicante in 1922.
From 1937 he studied in Mallorca, where he lived for 6 years. Then he traveled to Paris to study painting. There he met Picasso, Oscar Domínguez, Dalí, etc. After a brief stay in London, from 1946 he studied in Valencia and Madrid, frequenting artistic and literary circles. From 1952 he traveled and exhibited in Germany, France and England.
From 1953 to 1955 he devoted to sculpture in wrought iron and mosaic. From 1956 onwards he lived in Alicante. The influence of Impressionism and his taste for the expressive and surreal were a constant in his work.
During the fifties and sixties he evolved towards an Impressionism more expressive and surreal. From this period stands out the work "La Cigarrera" (1960), which shows the popular atmosphere with the tram that passed in front of the tobacco factory in those years.
In 1983 the death of his daughter Beatriz transforms the artist and his work, that passes of the impressionism to the abstraction in black and white.
He died in 2009.
