color woodcut with aluminum leaf, 13" x 12 3/4", 1930
New Mexico Museum of Art (Santa Fe, Nuevo Mexico, EE.UU./ NM, USA). FFLCM

"El corredor / The Corridor", acrílico y mármol sobre tela / acrylic and marble on canvas, 1976

"Habitación 211 / Room 211" óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 1978

"A Pilar le dan miedo las mariposas / Pilar is afraid of butterflies", 1977

Antonio Manuel Campoy
Murió en 1996.

"La caída / The Fall", 1971

On June 25 is the birthday of

Clive Wilkins, figurative painter from the United Kingdom born in 1954.
He works in the Northern European tradition of oil painting relying heavily on strong craft skills allied to a precise & studied drawing ability, as epitomised by artists of the Netherlandish or Flemish School, most notably Hans Memling & Van Eyck.
Wilkins has produced portraits of Sir Peter Blake and Sir Howard Hodgkin amongst notable others. He was presented to HRH Princess Royal during a visit to the Royal Holloway University in 1994.
His most recent work of note (2000–05) is a 31 painting sequence entitled "The Creatures in the Night". The content consists of a series of 31 Illustrations and accompanying text describing the journey of a young girl through a house in the dead of night.
He has produced paintings based on ideas emanating from Don Quixote (2006–08). Other main works currently in progress include two books, a picture story book entitled 'Mannikin' (2009), and most recently a novel entitled 'Moustachio' (2009).

On June 26 is the birthday of

Joseph, Baron Ducreux, French noble, portrait painter, pastelist, miniaturist, and engraver born in 1735 in Nancy, who was a successful portraitist at the court of Louis XVI of France, and resumed his career after the French Revolution. His less formal portraits reflect his fascination with physiognomy and show an interest in expanding the range of facial expressions beyond those of official portraiture.
Ducreux may have trained with his father, who was also a painter. When Ducreux went to Paris in 1760, he trained as the only student of the pastelist Maurice Quentin de La Tour, who specialized in portraiture. Jean-Baptiste Greuze was an important influence on Ducreux's oil technique.
In 1769, Ducreux was sent to Vienna in order to paint a miniature of Marie Antoinette before she left the city in 1770 and married Louis XVI of France. Ducreux was made a baron and premier peintre de la reine (First Painter to the Queen) in rewards for his services. Ducreux was given this appointment by Marie-Antoinette even though he was not a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which had been founded in 1648. The academy was strictly hierarchical and the posts of first painter, ordinary painter and inspector or inspector general of royal factories were customarily reserved for members of the academy.
At the outbreak of the French Revolution, Ducreux traveled to London. There he drew the last portrait ever made of Louis XVI before the king's execution.
Jacques-Louis David became one of Ducreux's associates when the latter returned to Paris in 1793.
He died in 1802.

On June 27 is the birthday of

Gustave Baumann, American printmaker and painter born in Magdeburg, Germany, in 1881, and one of the leading figures of the color woodcut revival in America. His works have been shown at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and the New Mexico Museum of Art. He is also recognized for his role in the 1930s as area coordinator of the Public Works of Art Project of the Works Progress Administration.
He moved to the United States in 1891 with his family. By age 17 he was working for an engraving house while attending night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. He returned to Germany in 1904 to attend the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich where he studied wood carving and learned the techniques of wood block prints. After returning to the U.S. he began producing color woodcuts as early as 1908, earning his living as a graphic artist.
He spent time in Brown County, Indiana as a member of the Brown County Art Colony, developing his printmaking technique. He followed the traditional European method of color relief printing using oil-based inks and printing his blocks on a large press. This contrasted with the trend at the time of many American artists to employ hand rubbed woodblock prints in the Japanese traditional style. By this time he had developed his personal artist's seal: the opened palm of a hand on a heart. His Mill Pond is the largest color woodcut produced at the time. These were shown at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition where Baumann won the gold medal for color woodcut. In 1918, he headed to the Southwest to inquire into the artists' colony of Taos, New Mexico. Thinking it too crowded and too social, he boarded the train which stopped in Santa Fe. Its art museum had opened the previous year and its curator, Paul Water, persuaded Baumann to stay in Santa Fe.
In Santa Fe, Baumann became known as a master of woodcuts and marionette-making, also producing oils and sculpture. His work depicted southwestern landscapes, ancient Indian petroglyphs, scenes of Pueblo life, and gardens and orchards. Baumann married Jane Devereaux Henderson on June 25, 1925. Their daughter, Ann, was born on July 31, 1927. He remained in Santa Fe for more than fifty years until his death there in 1971.
He died in 1971.

On June 28 is the birthday of

Manuel López-Villaseñor and López-Cano, Spanish painter born in Ciudad Real in 1924.
He had a difficult childhood due to paralysis. In his loneliness the drawing became his life, which led him to achieve in 1935 at age 11 the first extraordinary prize of the Press Association, in the Exhibition of "Machego Child Art".
After the Civil War, he was a student of Professors Manuel Mendía and Jerónimo Luna in Artistic Drawing and Jerónimo López-Salazar Martínez in Modeling and Casting in the School of Arts in Ciudad Real. In 1942 he moved to Madrid, beginning his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. In this time it began to receive numerous prizes.
Six years later he exhibited for the first time, in Ciudad Real and in the Sala "Macarrón", in Madrid. In 1949 he won by opposition, the Pension of Rome (fact that will mark him deeply), moved to Italy and had his first contact with the painting of the frescoes of Italian Trecento, especially Masaccio and Piero de la Francesca. Also discover the wall paintings of Pompeii. In 1950 he went to the Venice Biennale, to the "Mostra delle Accademie" in Rome, and to the Selective of Spanish artists in the Sala "Feria", in Rome and Naples.
In 1959 he was appointed Professor of Mural Painting and Pictorial Procedures at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Madrid, position in which he was until his retirement.
"Villaseñor was the guiding principle of the new Spanish realism. When Villaseñor proposed the new realism, other painters, now held by the realist masters, what they did was hyperrealism in the style of Americans. Because a thistle by Sánchez Cotán, a crock by Zurbarán, or a quince by Villaseñor, are exactly, more real and certain than his photographs. Metaphysical painting by Villaseñor. One of our few painters." Antonio Manuel Campoy
He died in 1996.

On June 29 is the birthday of

Oleg Turchin, Moldavian artist born in 1964 who paints realistic works with oil on canvas.
He studied at the children’s art school Sciusev under V.B. Bulba. In 1981, he began his studies at the Fine Arts College (I.E. Repin) under S.S. Babjuk and Proniaev. He later studied art at the Institute of Fine Arts under painting faculty leaders I.I. Serbinov and V.I. Kazakov.
Oleg brings a sharp eye and a flexible style that can encompass realism, photorealism and surrealism. His work is held in private collections in the USA, Italy, Holland, Turkey (Bora Collection), Ukraine, Greece, Russia, and in his home Republic of Moldova. He has shown in galleries in Greece and the Ukraine.

Yesterday, June 30, was the birthday of

Wilhelm Schnarrenberger, German painter born in Buchen in the Odenwald in 1892, one of the representatives of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity).
He graduated from high school. From 1911 to 1915 he attended the Royal College of Fine Arts Munich and studied architecture. From 1913 he was a pupil of the graphic designer Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke and a friend of Karl Rössing. In 1918 he was recruited for service in the First World War. He was active in 1919 for the magazine Der Weg and from 1920 for the magazines Wieland and Simplicissimus. Schnarrenberger taught at the Badische Landeskunstschule from 1921 to 1933.
In 1924 he was a founding member of ORNA's advertising and interior decoration workshops. Among the national socialists, his art was frowned upon and was forbidden as "degenerate" in 1937; after that he had not been allowed to teach. That year he moved to Berlin with his family, where he tried to earn a living as a freelance photographer. In 1938 he went to Lenzkirch in the Black Forest, where he and his wife Melitta (1909-1996) opened a small holiday retreat. Here he discovered the theme of still life that was so important in his later work. In 1947 he was appointed professor to the Staatliche Akademie der Bildende Künste Karlsruhe.
In 1962 he received the Hans Thoma Staatsspreis for his artistic work.
Schnarrenberger always emphasized the craftsmanship of his students, so they had to learn the drawing of architectural buildings and everyday objects before he painted them.
He died in 1966.
