Beth Moon has spent years touring the world, visiting the places where can be found the most spectacular examples of trees that still resist the advance of civilization. Her work is remarkable for several reasons: the studied selection of specimens, the undoubted quality of each one of her shots, the use of Platinotype, a process that offers fantastic results in terms of tonal ranges and durability of prints, and off course the emotional component that seeks to transmit with each image. As Beth said: "I do not simply want to document, but instead record the beauty and enthusiasm that I feel towards the subject when I take the photograph."
Here you have a selection of images of three projects, which focus specifically on the trees, although they are not the only ones. I refer to the links below to enjoy the rest of her body of work.

"Corazón del drago / Heart of the Dragon" - Dracaena cinnabari - Socotra, Yemen

Sparse branches that grow only at the trees top and look more like roots than a canopy give the baobab its nickname the "upside-down tree." The girth of the cylindrical trunk is approximately 45 feet in diameter. The tree is thought to be 1,200 years old, and has the ability to store more than 31,000 gallons of water.

Retratos del tiempo / Portraits of Time - "El baobab de Chapman / The Chapman's Baobab" - Adansonia digitata
Found near the village of Gweta, which is considered the gateway to the Makgadikgadi Pans, Chapman’s Baobab is thought to be over 1,000 years old and is one of the oldest and largest baobabs in Africa. A news item reports the fall of the tree in January 2016.

"El tejo negro de Whittinghame / The Whittinghame Yew" - Taxus baccata

Placed on the grounds of a Whittinghame Castle, in East Lothian, Scotland, is said to be over 1,200 years old.

«Many of the trees I have photographed have survived because they are out of reach of civilization; on mountainsides, private estates, or on protected land. Certain species exist only in a few isolated areas of the world. For example; there are 6 species of spectacular baobabs, found only on the island of Madagascar. Sadly, the baobab is now one of the three most endangered species on the island.
The criteria I use for choosing particular trees are basically three: age, immense size or notable history. I research the locations by a number of methods; history books, botanical books, tree registers, newspaper articles and information from friends and travelers.»

Noches de diamante / Diamond Nights, "Fornax"

La isla de la sangre del dragón / Island of the Dragon's Blood
"Rosa del desierto / Desert Rose" (Wadi Fa Lang) - Socotra, Yemen

«There are few places left on earth so remote and untouched by time. Socotra is one of the world’s last truly wild places with a uniquely diverse and enchanting landscape of surreal beauty.  Glimpsing the dragon’s blood trees that mantle the Haghier Mountains, one imagines this is what the world must have looked like millions of years ago.
Situated in the Arabian Sea off the horn of Africa, ruled by Yemen, the island of Socotra is home to over 700 native plants and animals found nowhere else on the earth. Cut off from the rest of the world due to hazardous travel and relentless monsoon winds, the island now has flights from the main land.»

Noches de diamante / Diamond Nights, "Polaris"

«As night falls over the Makgadikgadi Pans, giant trees stand starkly against the horizon. Leafless branches reach for the light. On the opposite side of the sky, Earth’s shadow is rising. True wildness manifests itself in the form of curling black branches in November, silhouetted against an indigo sky.
Time exposures blend the boundaries between the visible and the invisible. There is a middle zone where splendor comes into being, where two different realities mingle and blur. If magic exists anywhere, it is here.»

La isla de la sangre del dragón / Island of the Dragon's Blood
"Bosque de Diksom / Diksom Forest" - Dracaena cinnabari - Socotra, Yemen

«Living up to 500 years, the mythical dragon’s blood tree with vertical trunk and arching canopy could easily be imagined as an umbrella blown inside out. When the trunk is cut, a scarlet colored resin oozes from the tree prized for its celebrated medicinal qualities. Once a vast forest, these remaining trees, unique to Socotra are now classified as endangered. Recent years have shown a troubling decline due to over grazing and insufficient cloud cover needed for young saplings.»

Retratos del tiempo / Portraits of Time - "Los amantes / The Lovers" - Adansonia za
 Morondava, Madagascar

«With platinum printing, a process born of art and science noted for its beautiful luminosity and wide tonal scale, the absence of a binder layer allows very fine crystals of platinum to be embedded into the paper giving it a 3 dimensional appearance. Unrivaled by any other printing process, platinum like gold, is a stable metal. A print can last for thousands of years, emulating the age of the trees that I was photographing.»

Camboya / Cambodia

Some of the most spectacular trees in the world can be seen in Cambodia. There the jungle has colonized the structures embracing the ancient temples, creating a landscape of overwhelming beauty, in which can be verified the incredible force of nature recovering its space. These giants, whose roots are introduced into the cracks, breaking the stone and merging with the constructions, belong to the genus Tetrameles. This one, in particular, is a specimen of "Tetrameles nudiflora", known as "Spung" in local language.
In 2005 I had the opportunity to visit the place, and seeing the beautiful images of Beth, I thought to include some of mine. The first one is a view of the Ta Prohm from the angle opposite to that chosen by Beth, and in the other two the human presence gives an idea of the true dimensions ot thewe jewels of nature.
