Pintando perros / Painting Dogs (LII)

David Teniers the Younger, was a Flemish artist born in Antwerp in 1610, whom we already referred on the occasion of his birthday. Now a review of his work with dogs, quite abundant by the way. Dogs appear in some of his most famous paintings I publish here along with comments and information, as always.

Los perros de David Teniers el Joven /
The dogs of David Teniers The Younger

A group of villagers sit or stand indoors, smoking around a barrel that serves as their table. In the background, another warms himself beside the fireplace, and a figure enters the room. In the foreground are cooking or tavern utensils, such as a jug, a cauldron and a barrel, which display Teniers' skill at still-life and genre scenes. Outstanding here, is the naturalness of the dog. Huddled up, he contemplates the scene's protagonists. As a representation of everyday life, this work illustrates the expansion of tobacco in Europe. Criticized and praised in equal measure, it was consumed on a customary basis at that time.

Depictions of painting galleries became popular in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 17th century. The exhibition of paintings and other artistic or natural objects was originally a way of manifesting the high social standing of an eminently bourgeois class with a strong desire to ennoble itself. In many cases, the paintings did not rigorously reflect the client’s collection, but served instead as metaphorical allusions to his artistic interests and standing as an art lover. They bore witness to his intellectual and cultural commitment and, in that sense, they were very efficient propaganda tools.
The personages and artworks visible here make this one of the few paintings to depict a concrete, extant collection -a sort of catalog painting of the pictorial wealth built up by the archduke at his palace in Brussels.
Teniers painted several similar works for Leopold that were sent to different courts to impress them with his virtues as an art lover possessed of magnificent pictorial treasures. Thus, by sending this work to Philip IV soon after it was painted, the archduke seems to have wanted to honor his uncle as a lover of Italian painting, imitating the collections at Madrid’s Alcázar Palace. He may also have desired to challenge him by showing that the works at his palace in Brussels were able to compete with the King’s collection in Madrid.

Hermitage

In what is at first sight a pure piece of genre painting, the artist wove an allegory of the Four Elements. The figure of the falconer and his bird represent Air. In order to bring out the meaning of this figure that belongs very much to genre painting in terms of its character, Teniers has placed it beneath a window through which air and light stream. Fire is symbolized by the brazier on the table, the firebox of the stove and the cook and his assistants, who are depicted alongside. Water is represented by the fishermen (centre and right) with fish and other marine life. In Teniers's interpretation of the Four Elements, the figure of the falconer performs a sort of dual role. Besides Air, he also stands for the element of Earth, since the falconer is also a huntsman: he is depicted surrounded by dogs and dead game, while all manner of fruits of the earth (cabbage, apples, and so on) lie at his feet. Hermitage
