New thematic selection, this time dedicated to bookplates (also known as ex-librīs, Latin, "from the books of..."), those small print or decorative labels pasted into a book, often on the inside front cover, to indicate its owner, containing the name of the copy owner or the owning library.
The bookplates are usually prints made with different techniques (list of thechniques and symbols here), and there are many artists who are specialists in these images generally allegorical or related to the profession, activity, guild or hobbies of the owner. There are also many with erotic content, "macabre" theme (with skeletons or skulls alluding to the passage of time and death), monograms, etc. They are also frequent motifs related to the world of books and libraries.
I already posted on the blog samples of the work of artists whose bookplates I especially liked, as Oleg Denisenko and Julian Jordanov. Here you have a first selection, and hope to publish more in the future. For those interested, I recommend visiting these websites:

Jiří Brázda
(Teplice, Československo / Checoslovaquia / Czechoslovaquia, 1952-)

Ex libris para / Bookplate for Agaat und Jos Van Waterschoot, 11,7 x 7,6 cm., 1996. Link

Ex libris para / Bookplate for Lodevijk Deurinck, C3, C4, C7, 10,7 x 7,1 cm., 1994. Link

Jiří Brázda is a Czech painter, draftsman and printmaker born in 1952.
He started his artistic journey at the age of twenty seven after finishing his studies, which enable him to use the title “academic painter and graphic designer”. The title is a good thing, but it loses its sense without talent and diligence. Brázda is talented, ambitious enough, inquisitive in a good sense, willing for success (why not). He has been searching for his own path, own style, own signature. The spectator, the theorist and the critic can appraise his work during various exhibitions in the Czech Republic as well as abroad, where he has been presenting his twenty years lasting endeavour.
Jiří Brázda created his special world almost predominately occupied by women (the exceptions are usually bookplates, illustrations, drawings for exhibitions ordered by a client), men feature rather allegoric beings, or intruding figures, which do not belong to this world.

Henryk Feilhauer was a Polish artist born in 1942 in Czechowice, where he attended grammar school.
On receiving his General Certificate of Secondary Education he began to study  at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts;  he  continued the course at Nicholas Copernicus University of Fine Arts in Toruń between the years 1960 - 1965. His masters of graphical arts were: Prof. Jerzy Hoppen and Wojciech Jakubowski, who then introduced his students into the world of bookplates as a rightful artistic form. Directly after his graduation Feilhauer undertook to work as a teacher in the grammar school at Człuchów. After seven years of teaching, in 1972 he won a competition for the position of a visual artist in the Paris Commune Shipyard in Gdynia, where he stayed for ten years. During this time he was mainly occupied with medal engraving art, furniture and interior design and functional graphics. However, of all the different types of artistic work, he regarded technical graphics the most highly and it was this form that he remained faithful to until the end of his life. Tumultuous events at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s caused him to become wholly involved in the activities of Solidarity, including the construction of the Monument of the1970 December Victims in Gdynia. From 1982, however, he devoted himself completely to artistic creation. His works and drawings were shown in a number of expositions in Poland and abroad, including Germany, Argentina, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Denmark. He was a laureate of several awards, distinctions and honorary medals.
With regard to his technique he was a perfectly skilled graphic artist and he created small prints and bookplates as well as enormous copperplates with the same proficiency.
He died in 1999.
