_________________________________________________________

"Conexión X / Connection X", acero moldeado en frío y pintado / cold formed and painted steel, 430 x 320 x 190 cm., 2003

"La Batalla de San Romano / The Battle of San Romano"
Egg tempera with walnut oil and linseed oil on poplar, 181,6 x 320 cm., c. 1438–1440.
Galeria Uffizi (Firenze / Florencia, Italia / Florence, Italy)

"San Jorge y el Dragón / Saint George and the Dragon", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 57 × 73 cm., c.1470
National Gallery (Londres, Reino Unido / London, UK)

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 54,5 x 72,5 cm.

Venice Grand Canal with Fabbriche Nuove from Rialto", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 59 x 74,5 cm., c.1844

"Les Clowns Musiciens / Los payasos músicos / The Musician Clowns"

On June 12 is the birthday of

Jerry Ross, American painter born in 1944.
An art teacher recognized his talent and recommended that he be enrolled at the Art Institute of Buffalo, which he attended from age seven until age eleven.
His art teacher, a Mrs. Beagleman, favored an Impressionist style of painting, and she continued as his mentor until the Art Institute closed several years later.
He became an activist opposed to the Vietnam War (he was one of "the Buffalo Nine" group of defendants), and worked on behalf of the political prisoner Martin Sostre.
Ross's unabashedly leftist and at times strident political position may seem at odds with his paintings, which are imbued with a sense of poetry and calm. Yet, his lifetime of opposing political systems that he believes deny basic human rights is deeply integrated into an artistic approach that expresses nobility in the human being and value in a nurturing environment. In life, Ross works for the utopia he creates in his work. Upon reflection, even his style may be seen to express a political statement. In his own words, "Only the elite have time to 'finish' paintings."

On June 13 is the birthday of

Jan Victors or Fictor (bapt. June 13, 1619) was a Dutch Golden Age painter that focused mainly on painting subject from the Bible.
He was known in Haarlem on a taxation catalog in 1722 as a student of Rembrandt van Rijn. Though it is not certain that he worked for Rembrandt, it is clear from his Young girl at a window that he had looked carefully at Rembrandt's paintings. He was only twenty when he painted this scene, and the look of expectation on the girl's face shows a remarkable study of character. Like many painters in Amsterdam after the rampjaar of 1672, he fell onto bad times and took a position as ziekentrooster, a combi-job as professional nurse and cleric, with the Dutch East India Company in 1676.
He died soon after arrival in Indonesia, then the Dutch East Indies, in 1679.
He was a conscientious member of the Reformed Church, and for this reason he avoided creating art which depicts Christ, angels, or nudity.

On June 14 is the birthday of

Eliseo Valdes, artist born in  Havana, Cuba in 1956. A graduate of the San Alejandro Academy (1977), he earned an advanced degree from the Superior Institute of Art in 1982.
A contemporary painter and sculptor, Valdes' work evokes abstract expressionism and surrealism.  With his use of bold colors, abstract geometric shapes and amoeba-like forms, he creates  beautiful pieces that are both technically impressive and visually pleasing.
His paintings and sculptures are exhibited in museums and public art galleries around the world, including Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, and Germany.
In addition to his work as painter and sculptor, Valdes works as curator for the Cultural Foundation of Cuba.  Eliseo Valdes is member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC); member and specialist of the CODEMA National Advisory Board for the Development of the Monumental and Environmental Sculpture. From 1995 to 1998, he was member of the Workshop of Plastic Arts Ruckelshausen INC. of the Bildert Welt Gallery in Hamburg, Germany.
From 1985 to 1988 he exercised as the specialist of the Fund of Cultural Goods in Havana, Cuba.  He has taught different levels of artistic classes for students at National School of Art (ENA), among others.

On June 15 is the birthday of

Paolo Uccello (Paolo di Dono), Italian painter and a mathematician born in 1397, who was notable for his pioneering work on visual perspective in art. Giorgio Vasari in his book Lives of the Artists wrote that Uccello was obsessed by his interest in perspective and would stay up all night in his study trying to grasp the exact vanishing point. He used perspective in order to create a feeling of depth in his paintings and not, as his contemporaries, to narrate different or succeeding stories. His best known works are the three paintings representing the battle of San Romano (for a long time these were wrongly entitled the "Battle of Sant' Egidio of 1416").
Paolo worked in the Late Gothic tradition, and emphasized colour and pageantry rather than the Classical realism that other artists were pioneering. His style is best described as idiosyncratic, and he left no school of followers. He has had some influence on twentieth-century art and literary criticism (e.g., in the "Vies imaginaires" by Marcel Schwob, "Uccello le poil" by Antonin Artaud and "O Mundo Como Ideia" by Bruno Tolentino).
He died in 1475.

On June 16 is the birthday of

Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, itinerant Italian painter of frescoes, landscapes, vedute, capriccios and some religious works, born in 1762.
When he was still a boy, his family moved to Brescia, where he saw the works of Girolamo Romani and decided to become a painter. Later, his family moved again, to Venice, and he began his studies with Anton Maria Zanetti (The Younger), then enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, where he worked with Costantino Cedini. While there, he became friends with the architect Gian Antonio Selva, and went with him to Ferrara in 1787 to help decorate the Palazzo Bottoni.
Shortly after, he was in Padua, working as a set designer for the Obizzi family and, in 1790, was commissioned to do decorations for the Castello del Catajo. Two years later, he did similar work at the Palazzo Maffetti-Manzoni, then moved to Treviso, where he did frescoes on the ceiling of the Church of Saint Andrew in Volpago del Montello, the oratory of the Villa Bragadin in Ceggia and secular decorations for several villas in Lancenigo and Breda di Piave. From 1798 to 1800, he collaborated with Selva on decorations at the Palazzo Dolfin Manin in Venice.
Moving on to Trieste, he collaborated with Matteo Pertsch and the sculptor Antonio Bosa (1780-1845) to provide decorations for the Palazzo Carciotti and the stock exchange building. In 1811, he was in Zara, working at the Palazzo del Governatore. This was followed by decorative work (now lost) at the theaters in Vipacco and Gorizia.
At this time, he began to take advantage of a growing market for paintings in the homes of well-to-do non-aristocrats and, working in conjunction with a local art dealer named Tosoni, produced a wide variety of landscapes, vedute and other genres to satisfy local tastes. His canvases were expensive, but also very large.
In 1831, despite his successes in Trieste, he began wandering again, returning briefly to Brescia, then settling in Milan where he took some smaller commissions, but was not very successful and died poor in 1844.

On June 17 is the birthday of

Jean Isy de Botton, French painter born in Greece in 1898, who had a long and prolific career as painter, illustrator and muralist.
In 1920 de Botton enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris to study fresco painting under Antoine Bourdelle and Bernard Naudin. Following his studies, in 1924, de Botton sojourned in Spain where he discovered Zurbaran and El Greco, who left a lasting influence. On his return to Paris, de Botton received his first public commission.
In 1926 de Botton underwent the influence of Cézanne and researched the different movements of the Ecole de Paris: Post-Impressionism, Futurism, Expressionism, Symbolism and Abstraction. He also created the young artists' movement 'Evasion', bringing together painters, writers, philosophers, architects, and scientists seeking to avoid professional deformation. From 1925 onwards, de Botton participated in the 'Salon d'Automne' and the 'Salon des Indépendants'.
As the decades passed his style changed with the times; in the 1950s and into the 1960s he painted and exhibited many abstract compositions.
He died in 1978.

Today, June 18, is the birthday of

Joseph-Marie Vien (Joseph-Mary Wien), French painter born at Montpellier in 1716. He was the last holder of the post of Premier peintre du Roi, serving from 1789 to 1791.
Protected by Comte de Caylus, he entered at an early age the studio of Natoire, and obtained the grand prix in 1745. He used his time at Rome in applying to the study of nature and the development of his own powers all that he gleaned from the masterpieces around him; but his tendencies were so foreign to the reigning taste that on his return to Paris he owed his admission to the academy for his picture Daedalus and Icarus (Louvre) solely to the indignant protests of François Boucher.
When in 1776, at the height of his established reputation, he became director of the school of France at Rome, he refused to take Jacques-Louis David with him amongst his pupils, stating he was too old to teach a young artist. After his return, five years later, his fortunes were wrecked by the French Revolution; but he undauntedly set to work, and at the age of eighty (1796) carried off the prize in an open government competition. Napoleon Bonaparte acknowledged his merit by making him a senator.
He died in 1809.
