Textos en inglés / English Translation

[1]
"To understand how artists are trained in Cordoba (Argentine) we visited the City of Arts. Many good things happened on the trip. It was good to know and share with those who do art from Cordoba to the world. It was good to meet Juan Canavesi, artist and character at a time, a dignitary of the art of Cordoba that captivates you with his stories. But Juan is much more than that, is a person with a rich interior that shows his world as he speaks about his work with that local tune, when he invites you to immerse yourself in the construction of his whys, his memories. He lets you know the soul of his characters moving inflected by his hands between drawing and sculpture. "

[2]
Juan Canavesi was born in Córdoba, Argentine, en 1960. Here you have his reflections on his artistic journey.

«Very often people ask artists about the origin of their vocation or their first contact with art. In my case, my first link with art, happened when I was a child, in an unconsciously and playful way, creating objects and inventing games with my friends. As a teenager, I went to a pottery workshop and then a group of independent theater. The first class was the only and filled me with joy. I interrupted due to my father's decision and was very disappointing. All this happened in the '60s and the early 70s, in Cordoba, Argentina, where I live and work.»

[3]
«During a trip to Uruguay, finished high school, in 1978 (year of dictatorship and World Cup in Argentina), I discovered something that was in me forever and I managed to identify: I wanted to create, work with my hands, fly to imaginary worlds and through all this, detach from the everyday. On that trip, I made a visit to Casapueblo, owned by the artist Paez Vilaró, an experience that acted as an internal trigger. On my return to Cordoba I enrolled in the School of Fine Arts Dr. José Figueroa Alcorta, (now Faculty of Art and Design of the Provincial-UPC Córdoba University), where in April this year I celebrate thirty years as a teacher. Since then, my relationship with the visual arts was uninterrupted and marked my personal and professional identity.
The visit to his house and workshop of Paez Vilaró, at age 17, had a strong impact on me that manifested in at least three ways, that somehow influenced my later artistic development: the artist who experiences and travels different languages, art as a way of life and as an open house and workshop space in permanent transformation.»

[4]
«The next seven years of study at the School of Art were working, discovery and learning among other positive things, it took place the meeting with the sculptor Carlos Peiteado (see below), who was my teacher in sculpture and drawing. They were years of military dictatorship that left indelible marks on me and my art making. In 1985, two years after the return to democracy, I presented my thesis "Carne Existencial" and the following year after my graduation I got a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which allowed me to work at the School of Fine Arts Ernesto De la Cárcova in Buenos Aires, with the sculptors Juan Carlos Distefano and Antonio Pujía (see below), prominent Argentine artists with whom I explored and experimented with polyester resin and bronze.»

[5]
«From that moment on, my life began to interbreed with other languages of creation, not only with sculpture and drawing. These crosses were given, first, from scenographic works for works of contemporary dance, which led me to theaters in Argentina, Germany and Spain and allowed my drawings were exposed in galleries in Europe. In the late 80s, together with the choreographer and dancer Marcelo Gradassi (now deceased), we create CID, a production, research and training center for creators, without disciplinary boundaries. There took place the CID Biennials, the Paper Sculpture Workshops, Meetings of Experimental Graphics, the Halls of Austere Art, Centre for Engravings, etc. Years later, the place was transformed into what is now Antonia, my home workshop. With this I  materialized one of the insights I had in 1978, during my visit to the Casa Pueblo Paez Vilaró.»

[6]
«Looking back to my whole body of work, I can conclude that there has been a displacement of my gaze and my search from outside to my subjective and intimate universe. Not being necessarily autobiographical, my works are imbued with experiences and personal experiences. Subjectivity located in a particular social and cultural context - that of Argentina from the early seventies - sifts the social and historical and transmuted into images whose immediate reference to "reality" is indirect. Both in form and content, my work is kept away from the representation of the near and everyday, local, parochial and costumbrist.»

[7]
«Both in my drawings and my sculptures, body, human corporeality, has always been the object of experimentation and expression that I have used to express my disappointment, anger, loves and hates, meetings and disagreements, and so indirectly, the relationship between the "objective" world and its representation.
The body is the protagonist, or, more accurately, different representations of the same. I use it as a means of expression of multiple meanings, which are not fixed, nor maintain a unique style of representation. I use various plastic resources, incorporate and combine flexibility, expressive disinhibition, critical spirit and crosslinks techniques and artistic languages.»

[8]
«Animality in humanity is recurrent in my work. In Equs-female (1993) and Aker (2014), the most recent series, I use images that share human and animals forms (horses and sheep) -always vigorous- representing basic forces. Also appeal to animality is present in the drawings of male bodies in Factus, my first series of drawings (1984). Although they can be linked to magical-religious world views of various ancient representations are not strictly mythological images, or centaurs, or goats. In any case, current representations are more referred to the mythology of my own personal universe that archaic cultural traditions. This fusion of the human and the animal is a resource I use to remember who access them, the presence in the human, elemental forces underlying emotional traits, often repressed and socially condemned.»

[9]
«An important and turning point in my career came in 2000, after a trip to the State University of New York at New Paltz. Along with 17 other Argentine artists selected by Contemporary Graphic Buenos Aires, we worked in our respective personal projects, using the technique of photographic serigraphy in installation.
Back in my country, thanks to this experience and improvement in graphical techniques I began experimenting with silk-screening techniques in installations, which resulted in works and series like "Ex Voto in Red" and "High Tide" (participatory work of setting at ground level)»

[10]
«After my retrospective "Drawings 1984-2014" I closed a period of thirty years of work and started playing again, as that child I was. Antonia, my workshop whose name I chose posthumous tribute to my mother is transformed daily into a laboratory where I experiment and dive into a sea of ideas, objects and materials, seeking new forms of expression that serve as food for the new stage I transit. Thus, every day I renew my desire to continue working, every time I face a blank canvas or matter that claims to be transformed to give birth to a new work of art.»
Córdoba, February 2016

[11]
Flesh and Body
«I'm looking incompleteness of the body, tearing and pain of the flesh, the indefiniteness and sexual indeterminacy - animality.
I am seeking a sore and lacerated body that fight to live.
Torsion, tension, distortion, apparent and unstable equilibrium.
I am looking inside of a submitted, decadent and incomplete body - absent.
I remove the head, arms and hands, I keep the torso, legs and feet.
I draw on paper, any paper with charcoal or what I have.
I weld metal, iron, rusty metal sheet and found objects: my first research material, and I discard it.
I model wax, I stretched it out with my hands, I cut it and merge it with heat to copper structures. I choose the wax by its color, texture, smell and plasticity. I continue investigating.
I discover polyester resin, I investigate forcing the material, I experiment with solid and liquid cargo, I investigate with color, transparency, texture and ductility. I intend to represent bone structures with copper, I flatten it, mark it, fold it, weld it and assemble it with frameworks of polyester resin.
I'm still looking for the body and flesh.»
