El Águila y el Pollo / The Eagle and the Chicken

El Águila es una curiosa construcción uruguaya que solía visitar en los años '80, cuando veraneaba en la zona. Me resultó muy interesante descubrir esta "asonancia" con otra obra sita en un lugar tan distante como Java, y más aún descubrir algo que ignoraba, que también El Águila fue construida con la intención de hacer una capilla.

The Eagle is a curious uruguayan construction that I used to visit in the '80s, when summered in the area. I found it very interesting to discover this "assonance" with other work situated in such a distant place as Java, and discover something I ignored; The Eagle was also built with the intention of making a chapel.

El Águila, también llamada "Quimera" es una edificación de 1945 situada en el balneario uruguayo Villa Argentina. Se trata de un diseño realizado por Juan Torres, siendo su propietario Natalio Michelizzi de nacionalidad italiana quien se instaló en Uruguay para dedicarse a sus negocios.
El diseño consta de una estructura artesanal de piedra, con cabeza de águila y cuerpo de delfín, carente de planos y diseño arquitectónico.
Fue construida con materiales del lugar, y la idea inicial de su creador, consistió en erigir una capilla, proyecto que nunca se concretó.
Por tanto, pasó a ser un lugar de reuniones entre Michelizzi, sus amigos y familiares. Algunas leyendas, se originaron luego de la muerte de éste. Las mismas giraban en torno a la utilización del lugar como escondite de espías nazis, templo, y centro de energía cósmica. También se piensa que fue un mirador.
En 1997 "El Águila" fue declarada de interés Departamental por resolución municipal, y desde el año 2007 se decidió su protección con medidas cautelares por parte de la Intendencia Municipal de Canelones.

The Eagle, also called "Chimera" is a 1945 building located in the Uruguayan seaside resort Villa Argentina. It is a design by Juan Torres, owner Natalio Michelizzi being an Italian national who settled in Uruguay to go about his business.
The design consists of a handmade stone structure in the form of the head of an eagle and the body of dolphin, lacking plans and architectural design.

En las montañas de Java Central, Indonesia, uno puede encontrar esta iglesia en ruinas, abandonada, con la forma de un pollo gigante. Conocida como Gereja Ayam ("Iglesia del pollo") por los locales, la construcción atrae cada año a fotógrafos y exploradores de todo el mundo a las colinas de Magelang, a pesar de que ha estado cerrada desde 2000. (*)

(*) Actualmente (11/2019) la iglesia está abierta y puede visitarse.

In the mountains of Central Java, Indonesia, one can find this church in ruins, abandoned, in the shape of a giant chicken. Known as Gereja Ayam ("Chicken Church") by locals, the construction annually attracts photographers and explorers from around the world to the hills of Magelang, although that has been closed since 2000. (*)

Información sobre los artistas / Info about artists

Herbert Dombrowski nació en Hamburgo en 1917 y comenzó a tomar fotos siendo estudiante de secundaria. Tenía 19 años cuando se fue al puerto de Hamburgo por la noche para fotografiar el SS St. Louis. La imagen, tomada con una cámara Leica, fue publicada en la portada de Reclams Universum, una popular revista ilustrada.
Después de la guerra comenzó una carrera como fotógrafo profesional. Abrió un pequeño estudio en el barrio Eppendorf de Hamburgo y se puso a trabajar para una tienda de muebles y para el gremio local de los peluqueros. Durante 1949 y 1950 hizo dinero tomando fotos de los bañistas en Timmendorfer Strand, un balneario a orillas del mar Báltico, y aprendió a interactuar con la gente directamente.
Fotografió para Hamburger Journal, Stern Magazine  y el semanario Der Spiegel.
Las imágenes de Herbert Dombrowski son eternas y a la vez exactos y milimétricos documentos de su época.
Murió en mayo de 2010.

Herbert Dombrowski was born in Hamburg in 1917 and began to take pictures as a high-school student. He was 19 when he went to the Hamburg port at night to photograph the SS St. Louis. The image, taken with a used Leica camera, was published on the cover of Reclams Universum, a popular illustrated magazine.
After the war he started a career as a professional photographer. He opened a small studio in the Hamburg neighborhood of Eppendorf and began to work for a furniture store and the local hairdresser’s guild. During 1949 and 1950 he made money by taking pictures of beachgoers in Timmendorfer Strand, a seaside resort on the shores of the Baltic Sea, and learnt how to interact with people directly.
He photographed for Hamburger Journal, Stern Magazine and the news weekly Der Spiegel.
Herbert Dombrowski’s images are timeless while accurate and pinpoint documents of his time.
He died in May 2010.

Hannes Kilian fue un fotógrafo alemán nacido en 1909. Goza de una reputación mundial como fotógrafo de los grandes ballets. Con su sensibilidad inusual para el fenómeno del movimiento, sabía exactamente cómo plasmarlo en una fotografía fija. Esta fue también la mejor base posible para una carrera exitosa como fotoperiodista.
Kilian trabajó para algunos de los periódicos y revistas más importantes, incluyendo Time, el Picture Post, Spiegel y Stern, mientras publicaba también numerosos libros.
Murió en 1999.

Hannes Kilian was a German photographer born in 1909. He enjoys a worldwide reputation as a photographer of great ballets. With his unusual sensitivity for the phenomenon of motion, he knew exactly how to lend movement to a still photograph. This was also the best possible foundation for a successful career as a photojournalist.
Kilian worked for some of the most important newspapers and magazines, including Time, the Picture Post, Spiegel, and Stern, while publishing numerous books as well.

Stanko Abadžić es un fotógrafo y fotoperiodista croata nacido en 1952. Vive y trabaja en Zagreb.
Comenzó su carrera profesional en la fotografía como un reportero gráfico del diario croata Vjesnik. Durante ese período hizo conocidos reportajes de Túnez, Malta, Turquía y otros países. Después del inicio de la Guerra de Croacia en 1991, Abadzic se trasladó al extranjero y no volvería a Croacia durante muchos años. Después de cuatro años en Alemania, pasó siete años en Praga (República Checa), una ciudad que tuvo un gran impacto en su expresión artística. En este punto de su carrera se alejó del fotoperiodismo hacia la fotografía artística. Stanko Abadžić is a Croatian photographer and photojournalist born in 1952. He lives and works in Zagreb.
He began his professional career in photography as a photojournalist for the Croatian daily newspaper Vjesnik. During that period he made well-known reportages from Tunisia, Malta, Turkey and other countries. After the onset of the Croatian war of independence in 1991, Abadžić moved abroad and would not return to Croatia for many years. After four years in Germany, he spent seven years in the Czech Republic in Prague, a city which had the greatest impact on his artistic expression. At this point in his career he moved away from photojournalism towards art photography. In the Czech Republic he participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, the largest of which was a retrospective exhibition at the gallery Dom Jozefa Sudka in Prague, on which occasion his first monograph U ogledalu života (In The Mirror of Life) was published. Yuval Hen creció en Tel Aviv (Palestina Ocupada) y se trasladó a Londres en el año 2002. Como fotógrafo autodidacta y director de cine, está constantemente tratando de desarrollar nuevas técnicas y llevando los límites más allá. Se especializa en fotografía de moda, retratos y publicidad.
Su trabajo llamó la atención de Madonna quien le encargó recrear imágenes de Edward y la señora Simpson en el set de su película W.E.
Sus clientes en publicidad y editoriales incluyen Aveda, Gina, María Grachvogel, Bastyan, Anna Valentine, Financial Times How To Spend It, Vogue turca, Sunday Times Style, Schon Magazine, Wonderland, Tatler y Sunday Telegraph.
El trabajo de Yuval ha sido parte de una exposición en el Museo de la Imagen en movimiento, en Nueva York, junio de 2012.

Yuval Hen grew up in Tel Aviv (Occupied Palestine) and moved to London in 2002. As a self-taught photographer and film-maker he is constantly seeking to develop new techniques and push boundaries. He specializes in shooting Fashion, Portraits and Advertising.
His work caught the eye of Madonna who commissioned him to recreate images of Edward and Mrs Simpson on the set of her film, W.E.
Yuval’s advertising and editorial clients include Aveda, Gina, Maria Grachvogel, Bastyan, Anna Valentine, Financial Times How To Spend It, Turkish Vogue, Sunday Times Style, Schon Magazine, Wonderland, Tatler, Sunday Telegraph.
Yuval’s work has been part of an exhibition at the Museum of Moving Image in New York, June 2012.
