Sucedió en el museo... (I) / It Happened at the Museum... (I)

In this new series, I intend to share with you art related to museums and galleries, but not for the works exposed, but those in which the place, workers, visitors, and what happens there are the main motif, either through paintings, engravings, performances, but mainly photographs.
This also gives me a good excuse to review works and artists in these spaces by  providing images and additional information, as usual, in the related ANNEX.

Andy Freeberg (I)
(Nueva York, EE.UU./ NY, USA)

"Unadilla Dinner de Goings, Museo Estatal Ruso / Goings' Unadilla Diner, Russian State Museum"

"La muerte de Inés de Castro de Karl Brullow, Museo Estatal Ruso /
Karl Brullow's Death of Ines de Castro, Russian State Museum"

Konchalovsky’s Family Portrait, State Tretyakov Gallery"

"Naturaleza muerta de Matisse, Museo Hermitage / Matisse Still Life, Hermitage Museum"

"Moisés y el Esclavo Moribundo de Miguel Ángel, Museo Pushkin /
Michelangelo’s Moses and the Dying Slave, Pushkin Museum"

Paolo Veronese's Mystical Marriage of St. Catherine, Hermitage Museum"

Repin’s Portrait of Baroness von Hildenbandt, State Tretyakov Gallery"

Photographer Andy Freeberg was born in New York City and studied at the University of Michigan. He began his career as a photojournalist and now alternates his assignment work with fine art projects. His work has appeared in publications such as Time, Fortune, Der Spiegel, and Rolling Stone. His travel jobs have taken him to Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa, including two treks up Mt. Kilimanjaro. His photographs are in many public and private collections including SFMOMA, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Portland Art Museum, the George Eastman House, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Pier 24. He currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

"Palacio Stroganov, Museo Estatal Ruso / Stroganov Palace, Russian State Museum"

"Irene Starzhenetskaya y Anatoly Komelin de Vatagin, Galería Tretyakov /
Vatagin's Irene Starzhenetskaya and Anatoly Komelin, State Tretyakov Gallery"

In his book Guardians, photographer Andy Freeberg has captured whimsical and poetic images of women who guard the art in the great museums of Russia. In 2008 and 2009 Freeberg shot the 36 color photographs that appear in the book at four Russian museums: the Hermitage and Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg, and the Tretyakov Gallery and Pushkin Museum in Moscow.

Veronese’s Adoration of the Shepherds, Hermitage Museum"

In many of the photographs the women magically assume characteristics of the art they guard. One woman with a blue and white sweater draped over her shoulders sits beside a Matisse still life, whose blue tablecloth could be cut from the same material. Some of the guardians watch over paintings whose subjects suggest younger versions of themselves. And one woman, poised in a room of European masterpieces, appears to have emerged from a Vermeer.

Petrov-Vodkin’s Bathing of a Red Horse, State Tretyakov Gallery"

"Retrato de I. P. Degas de Altman, Galería Tretyakov / Altman’s Portrait of I.P. Degas, Tretyakov Gallery"

We'll be back on the work of Freeberg in future posts, with both his series of museums and with other very good work on art dealers meeting with collectors, selling and negotiating.
