On March 15 is the birthday of

Márton Váró, Hungarian sculptor born 1943 in Székelyudvarhely (now Odorheiu Secuiesc, Romania), recognized for his monumental public art.
He attended Ion Andreescu Institute of Arts in Cluj, Romania (1960 to 1966), studying sculpture. In 1970, he relocated to Debrecen, Hungary, where he soon completed several sculptures for public places. He was awarded the Munkácsy Prize in 1984.
The recipient of a Fulbright scholarship in 1988, Váró moved to Orange County, California, where he immediately became affiliated with the University of California, Irvine. His initial years in the US were focused on studying the relationship between architecture and sculpture. In 1990, he became the Artist in Residence in the City of Brea, California, for a public art project.
Váró currently lives and works in California, spending summers working in Carrara, Italy, where his marble originates.
Márton Váró primarily uses Carrara marble as the medium for his sculptures; however, he also works with other stones, such as Texas limestone. He is noted for his life-size sculptures, which are figurative in nature. His sculptures often depict draped female figures, often emerging from the block of stone from which they are carved. His approach to sculpting is true to classic form, carving directly into the marble or stone.

On March 16 is the birthday of

Carmelo Arden Quin, Uruguayan artist born in 1913.
Before he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina during the early 1940s, he lived in Uruguay and Brazil. In 1946 Arden moved to Paris and returned to Argentina in 1955 for a total of one year, and in 1956 he moved indefinitely to Paris where he died. He has been a poet, political writer, painter, sculptor and co-founder, together with the Argentinian-Hungarian Gyula Kosice, of the international artistic movement "Madí".
Arden Quin's personal style is full of contrasting colors and geometric patterns. Some of the main characteristic concepts in Quin's work are the irregular shaped frames, his "formes galbées" these are an alternation of concave and convex forms mainly in wood work, plastique blanche which are highly polished enameled wood pieces, and the coplanals, those are a series of polygons forming a single piece that in some cases include moveable elements and sometimes remains static.
He died in 2010.

On March 17 is the birthday of

François Girardon, French sculptor born in 1628 in Troyes.
He was one of the masters of decorative and monumental sculpture. It was the protégé of Chancellor Séguier who sent him to Rome for his formation. Scholar in 1657, was one of the principal contributors to Charles Le Brun.
He worked with the latter and with André Le Nôtre in the construction of Vaux-le-Vicomte.
He participated in the decoration of the Apollo Gallery of the Louvre and made important works for the gardens of the Palace of Versailles: the Apollo served by the Nymphs, The statue of Winter, the bas-relief Bathing Nymphs of that, a reduced model, located in the Louvre.
He also sculpted the tomb of Richelieu, at the Sorbonne, and the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, erected in front of Louis-le-Grand (now Place Vendome) which was destroyed during the French Revolution and of which there is a reduced model in the Louvre.
He died in 1715.

On March 18 is the birthday of

Achille Beltrame, Italian illustrator and painter born in 1871. He was also the celebrated author of the cover of the weekly La Domenica del Corriere for nearly half a century.
With 28 years was invited to contribute to the edition of La Domenica del Corriere by his contemporary Luigi Albertini. The first issue of the magazine was published on June 8, 1899. During the 40 years of work 4662 editions were published with illustrations by Beltrame, who worked steadily without vacation until February 1, 1945.
"Through the images he created - wrote Dino Buzzati - the most important and unique in the world events could reach the homes of most isolated rural areas, even the most remote valleys, to the most humble homes, providing a flow of news and knowledge to generations of Italians who otherwise would not have known almost nothing. A master of graphic arts, but also a formidable master of journalism ... ".
The Beltrame color covers became the most distinctive element of the magazine. In them the history of dress and of Italian society were displayed during the first half of the twentieth century. News, sports and customs were masterfully summarized by the arzignanense illustrator, allowing meet current events to a population still illiterate. He never moved from Milan.
He died in 1945.

On March 19 is the birthday of

Gaston Lachaise, American sculptor of French birth (1882).
He was most noted for his female nudes such as Standing Woman. Gaston Lachaise was taught the refinement of European sculpture while living in France. He met a young American woman, Isabel Nagel, and the pair moved to America, where his craft reached maturity and he was influenced and inspired by American ways. Lachaise helped redefine the female nude in a new and powerful manner. His drawings also reflected his new style of the female form.
Lachaise's most famous work, Standing Woman (modeled 1928-30, cast ca. 1933, Museum of Modern Art, New York), typifies the image that Lachaise worked and reworked: a voluptuous female nude with sinuous, tapered limbs. Lachaise was also known as a brilliant portraitist. He executed busts of famous artists and literary celebrities, such as John Marin, Marianne Moore, and E. E. Cummings. In 1935 the Museum of Modern Art in New York City held a retrospective exhibition of Lachaise's work, the first at that institution for any American sculptor.
He died in 1935.

On March 20 is the birthday of

Renée (Renate Alice) Sintenis, German sculptor, attached to Expressionism born 1888 in Glatz. She created especially small sculptures of animals, nudes and sports figures.
She spent her youth in Neuruppin and Stuttgart, where she received painting lessons. From 1907-1910 she studied sculpture at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin (Kunstgewerbemuseums Berlin) with Wilhelm Haverkamp. However, she had to suspend her studies to work with her father as a secretary. Soon it became independent, and started with small-scale sculpture from 1913, achieving great success since. In 1917 she married the calligrapher and painter Emil Rudolf Weiß. In the 1920s she had her greatest successes. Her dealer, Alfred Flechtheim, presented her work in Paris and New York. In 1931 she became the first admitted sculptor in the Prussian Academy of Arts.
In 1934, she was racially excluded by the Nazis of Academy of Arts. After the death of her husband in 1942, she fell into a deep crisis. In 1945 her apartment was destroyed, losing all her belongings and much of her work. Since 1947 she worked as a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Berlin, and in 1955 was included in the newly founded Academy of the Arts, Berlin (West). Her statue Berlin Bear (1957) is currently used for the prizes to the winners of the Berlin International Film Festival.
She died in 1965.

Today, March 21, is the birthday of

Hiroyuki Hamada, Japanese born (1968) sculptor based in the United States.
He grew up in Japan until the age of eighteen, then moved with his family to Wheeling, West Virginia where his father held a temporary post in the steel industry; the culture shock Hamada experienced was underscored by the linguistic gap, and it was through the study of drawing while in college that Hamada found an outlet to bridge the gap. He changed his major from psychology to studio art, then went on to earn a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Maryland.
Hiroyuki Hamada is distinguished for achieving extraordinary effects of spatial depth through a time consuming, meticulous process.
He transforms non-art materials, enamel, tar, wax, burlap, plastic, into powerful artistic forms, and arranges those industrial and even brutal materials in gentle, smooth shapes. Surfaces are "richly textured", often marked by sectioning.
