David Robert Mullen

"Efecto Lago / Lake Effect"

"Deconstruyendo a CalderDeconstructing Calder"

"Aquí llega la inundación / Here Comes the Flood"

"Nueva hoja / New Leaf"

"Cayendo en desgracia / Falling From Grace"

"Nubes Chicago / Clouds Chicago"

«When I was 18, I received a used 35mm camera, and that was the beginning of my love affair with light, film, and print.
In college, I majored in photography. After much trial and error, I realized that I would be more effective as an artist with a camera, and it made sense that I should learn more about fine art. I enrolled in a fine art program to study drawing and water paint mediums. It was there I learned that before I could effectively express my imagination on canvas or paper, I had to first master the technique. The art of imagination cannot be taught—it is a love affair and a life’s journey for those of us who have to make art.»

"París, Francia / Paris, France" (Notre Dame)

"Girasol de los Jardines de la Comunidad de Hillcrest / Sunflower from Hillcrest Community Gardens"

«As far as artist, authors and cultural figures that have had a influence on me and my work, well there has been many. The artist of influence started with the surrealist such as Dali and Ernst. Later Rufino Tamayo, Francis Bacon, and to many to mention here. The point is not to tape blinders to your particular focus or dimension of artistry you may practice. Look at Artist from around the globe and see and feel their communicative technique and visual power.
Photographers that I have a deep respect for and whose images are dear old friends would be a few, Minor White, Wynn Bullock, Eugene Smith, Mary Ellen Mark and Brett Weston to name a few.»

«Throughout my journey, I have explored many genres of art with camera and paintbrush, from street photography to photographing landscapes to still life work with 8x10 cameras. I made the transition from large and medium format cameras to digital photography in 2004. Photography is a progressive technology, and digital photography has thrown the doors wide open. There are now no limits to photographic expression.
So, my love affair with imagination, light, color, and fine art print continues. I feel comfortable working in the genres of art in which I want to communicate—whether that is surrealism, abstract expressionism, or realism of a quiet still life that manifests in an inner light.»

"Girasol / Sunflower"

"Consumo / Consumption"

«My new portfolios convey the relationship of chaos to conceptual form in which a dance of perceptions takes place. Some are dark formats of humanity and their unconscious nihilistic drive to destruction. Then there is the color abstracts I create and I explore my interpretation of chaos and  my perception of the universe in perpetual motion of duality of creation and destruction. The journey is to arrive at a perception that dissolves the duality in which we intellectually perceive reality.
I have accumulated thousands of images in my 35 years as a fine art photographer. I continue to photograph, but now my work comprises light and form for the imagination to assemble. I work in Photoshop and other software to construct a final file. The current work is a compilation of abstractions and montage.»

"Estudio de un girasol III / Sunflower Study III"

"Momia / Mummy"

"Abstracto en azul y rojo / Red And Blue Abstract"

«I think in imagery, play with images, and then construct these into works of art through free association. The abstractions are mental and digital sketches that I manipulate until an assemblage becomes visually coherent with color, form, and light. I don’t think perception is just empty awareness. No it is a movement that is a continuum of exploring mind.
Sometimes there are hundreds of layers in a montage or collage, including layers with digital cutout images. It often takes hours to find images that will form relationships with other images.
My process begins with an idea or a theme that I want to explore. I start from there and work layer upon layer, cutting out images and textures, and then discarding the ones that don’t work. Many times, the final file is developed over the course of weeks or months of work.»
