On October 12 is the birthday of

Al Held, American abstract expressionist painter born in 1928, particularly known for his large-scale paintings sharply delineated forms.
No expressed interest in art until he left the Navy in 1947. Inspired by his friend Nicholas Krushenick, he enrolled at the Art Students League of New York. In 1949 he traveled to Paris where he spent three years studying at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Decided that realism was not for him, and turned to abstraction. Admirer of Jackson Pollock, became expressionist. He returned to New York in 1953 and he married Giselle Wexler.
After his 1959 solo exhibition, his large and colorful paintings with abstract geometric shapes gained increasing recognition in the United States and Europe.
In 1966 he was awarded with a Guggenheim Fellowship and received the Logan Medal of the arts. Sensing the potential of his style was exhausted in 1967 changed to black and white images, with challenging perspectives and "spatial puzzles." He died in 2005.

Henry Merwin Shrady, American sculptor born in 1871, best known for the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial on the west front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Shrady graduated from Columbia University in 1894, and spent one year at Columbia's law school. He left law school to join with his brother-in-law, Jay Gould (son of the financier Edwin Gould), at the Continental Match Company. The company failed, and Shrady contracted typhoid fever, which diverted him forever from the business world. His recuperation left spare time to pursue a growing interest in art.
Shrady's wife, Harrie Moore, submitted some of his paintings to an exhibition of the National Academy of Design without his knowledge, and they sold quickly. He then began to teach himself sculpture using zoo animals and his pets as models.
He modeled a series of popular bronze statuettes, mostly of animals. His first major commission came in 1901, for George Washington at Valley Forge, an equestrian statue for Continental Army Plaza in Brooklyn, New York.
He died in 1922.

On October 13 is the birthday of

Sir Terry Frost, English artist born in 1915 known for his abstract works.
He did not become an artist until age 30. During his service in the Army during World War II, he met and received teachings by Adrian Heath while a prisoner of war. Later he attended the Camberwell School of Art and the St. Ives School of Art. In 1941 he worked as an assistant to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth.
His academic career includes teaching at the Bath Academy of Art, the Cyprus College of Art and the University of Leeds. Later he was a resident artist and professor of painting at the Fine Arts Department of the University of Reading. In 1992 he was elected Royal Academician and knighted in 2000.

Walasse Ting (丁雄泉) (Ding Xiongquan or Ting Hsiung-ch'uan), Chinese-American visual artist and poet born in 1929. His colorful paintings have attracted critical admiration and a popular following. Common subjects include nude women and cats, birds and other animals.
In 1957, he moved to the United States, and settled in New York where his work was influenced by pop art and abstract expressionism. He began primarily as an abstract artist, but the bulk of his work since the mid- 1970s has been described as popular figuratism, with broad areas of color painted with a Chinese brush and acrylic paint.
He lived in Amsterdam in the 1990s, but regularly moved between there and New York.
He won the Guggenheim Fellowship Award (for Drawing) in 1970
He died in 2010.

On October 14 is the birthday of

Pedro Sáenz Sáenz, Pre-Raphaelite painter born in Malaga in 1863. Disciple of Bernardo Ferrandiz, studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
He earned several medals in the General Exhibitions in 1887, 1897 and 1901.
In 1904 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Alfonso XIII. He developed the portrait, among which the most prominents are those made to the general Polavieja, Francisco Bergamin and Marchioness of Loring. But it's in the female nude which captures all the delicacy of women, repeating a kind of idealized woman who quickly attracts the viewer's attention not for his pleasure (because it is cold naked, academicians), but by their bright and delicate nuances, lacking almost entirely of contrasting color. At the Museum of Fine Arts in Malaga can be seen some of his works. He died in 1927.

José Guerrero, Spanish painter and engraver born in 1914, U.S. citizen, part of the Abstract Expressionism.
He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Granada. He traveled to Madrid to study at the Academy of San Fernando. He later moved to Paris (1945), where he meets the work of the European avant-garde, in particular, of Spanish painters such as Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró and Juan Gris. In this early period his work was still figurative.
He married Roxanne Pollock, American journalist, and in 1950 he went to New York, nationalizing U.S. in 1953. Began to make abstract painting there, forming part of the New York School, whose exhibitions he participated. Since then was influenced by painters like Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and Barnett Newman. Remarkable for his chromaticism, his use of color masses.
From 1965, while still living in the United States, traveled to Spain several times.
He died in 1991.

On October 15 is the birthday of

Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval, Icelandic painter born in Efti Ey in 1885.
He studied painting in Reykjavik and Copenhagen, with short stays in Italy, England and France. Between 1915 and 1925 he was married to writer Tove Merrild.
Bohemian painter, known by the nickname Kjarval lived usually from hand to- mouth. He lived for a time in an artists' colony in Húsafell. Mainly developed two themes, representing the Icelandic landscape and the reconstruction of Nordic folklore characters like elves and trolls. In 1930 he published his book Grjot (rock).
His works are exhibited in Reykjavik, in Kjarvalstaðir Museum at Miklatún Park and the Museum Kjarvalsstofa in Borgarfjordur, on the eastern coast of the island. His portrait appears next to one of his oil paintings in the bank note 2000 ISK. A book of Kjarval with texts by Halldór Laxness and 80 reproductions was published in 1950. He died in 1972.

Jacques Joseph "James" Tissot, was a French painter and illustrator born in 1836. He was a successful painter of Paris society before moving to London in 1871. He became famous as a genre painter of fashionably dressed women shown in various scenes of everyday life. He also made paintings illustrating the Bible.
In 1856 or 1857, Tissot travelled to Paris to pursue an education in art. While staying with a friend of his mother, painter Elie Delaunay, Tissot enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts to study in the studios of Hippolyte Flandrin and Louis Lamothe, both successful Lyonnaise painters who came to Paris to study under Ingres. Lamothe provided a majority of Tissot's studio education, while he studied on his own as did most other artists of the time, by copying works at the Louvre.
In 1874, Degas asked him to join them in the first exhibition organized by the artists we call the Impressionists, but Tissot refused. He continued to be close to the artists however. Berthe Morisot visited him in London in 1874 and he travelled to Venice with Édouard Manet at about the same time. He regularly saw Whistler, who influenced Tissot's Thames scenes
He died in 1902.

On October 16 is the birthday of

Nils Burwitz, artist, painter, sculptor and professor born in Germany, in 1940. He's based in Valldemossa, Spain.
In 1958 he emigrated with his parents to South Africa, where he majored in Fine Arts at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he completed postgraduate courses. With a scholarship he moved to London, Freiburg and Salzburg, cities where he continued his training. In 1976 he settled in the Balearic Islands, Spain.
His work has been exhibited many times, including several retrospectives in Palma de Mallorca, Pretoria, London and Munich.
He has collaborated with various artists such as R. Kirby, V. Rodzyanko, R. Mats. With A. Ballester made the windows of the churches of San Felipe, Santiago and Santa Eulalia in Palma de Mallorca, and ones in Lluc Monastery and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Valldemossa.
His works are held in various private and public collections.

Rembrandt Bugatti, Italian sculptor born in 1884, known primarily for his bronze sculptures of wildlife subjects.
He grew up in an environment where a great many of his parent's friends were from the artistic world. In 1902, the family moved to Paris, where they lived in a community of artisans. As a child he hung around his father's workshop and was encouraged to try sculpting in plasticine by the family friend and renowned Russian sculptor, Prince Paolo Troubetzkoy (1866–1938).
Bugatti was a young man when he began to work with the art foundry and gallery owner, Adrian Hébrard. He produced a number of bronzes which were successfully exhibited and promoted by Hébrard. Bugatti's love of nature led to him spending a great deal of time in the wildlife sanctuary near the Jardin des Plantes in Paris or at the Antwerp Zoo where he studied the features and movement of exotic animals. His sculptures of animals such as elephants, panthers and lions became his most valuable and popular works.
He died in 1916.

Louis-Léon Cugnot, French sculptor born in 1835.
Cugnot was born in Paris, son of the sculptor Etienne Cugnot. He entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in the 1850s under teachers Francisque Joseph Duret and Georges Diebolt. Cugnot took the Prix de Rome in 1859 along with co-winner Alexandre Falguière, and was a pensioner of the Villa Medici in Rome from 1860 to 1863.
He died in 1894.

Today, October 18, is the birthday of

John Vanderlyn, American neoclassical painter born in 1776 in Kingston, New York.
He was protected from Aaron Burr who in 1796 sent him to Paris, where he studied for five years. He returned to the United States in 1801 and lived in the home of Burr, then Vice President.
In 1802 he painted two views of Niagara Falls, which were engraved and published in London in 1804. He returned to Paris in 1803, also visiting England in 1805, where he painted the Death of Bliss McCrea for Joel Barlow. He then went to Rome, where he painted his Mario among the ruins of Carthage, which was exhibited in Paris and won the gold medal of Napoleon. He was in Paris for seven years, with great success. From 1812 is the nude Ariadne. When Aaron Burr fled to Paris, Vanderlyn was for a time his only support. He returned to the United States in 1815, where he excelled with portraits of eminent men like Washington and also exhibited panoramas of various cities where he had been, but none of his works gave him a great financial success because he worked slowly. He died in poverty in 1852.

Luca Giordano, Italian late Baroque painter and printmaker in etching born in 1634. Fluent and decorative, he worked successfully in Naples and Rome, Florence and Venice, before spending a decade in Spain.
He was the son of the painter Antonio Giordano. In around 1650 he was apprenticed to Ribera on the recommendation of the viceroy of Naples and his early work was heavily influenced by his teacher.
Following a period studying in Rome, Parma and Venice, Giordano developed an elaborate Baroque style fusing Venetian and Roman influences. His mature work combines the ornamental pomp of Paul Veronese with the lively complex schemes, the "grand manner", of Pietro da Cortona. He is also noted for his lively and showy use of colour. He died in 1705.
