Pintando perros (XXXIV) - Guillermo Lorca

«Casita de Dulces [Little house of sweets] (…) emerged as a re-reading of Bruno Bettelheim’s book Psychoanalysis of Fairy Tales. The symbolism inside fairy tales is a topic that has always fascinated me. When I read the part making reference to Hansel and Gretel, I came up with an image to the last painting. According to Bettelheim, the house represents the existence based in the most primitive satisfactions and the children, dragged by their impulses, don’t think about anything but to destroy what could shelter them or give them security. That contradiction, that attraction towards the abyss makes a lot of sense to me. Phrases so prosaic like “I will eat this baby” or “He so yummy” points out this consuming impulse of what is loved (I killed her because I loved her).»

«There are many people painting a lifetime and fails, that is a reality. It's not something you can just give it time and you learn more. It is a bit like singing. If you take singing lessons, you'll sing much better, you'll have better voice, but you'll not sing like Pavarotti ever. It must come out. Sometimes talent is clearly indispensable for realism. Without talent, things just will not work. (...) I'm talking about the talent only with the technical, not necessarily whether a person is good or bad artist. René Magritte, a well known artist, was a person with very little talent, he's really almost clumsy, but he's a great artist, one of the most important artists of the twentieth century for his proposal. Finally it would have been very helpful for him to be in a time where there had been things like digital media and stuff to supplement his lack of talent, but that was not an impediment to move forward and be a very good artist.»

«... and another thing is to seek harmony of the painting. Not necessarily balance or symmetry, but suddenly the elements in question are configured so that it arises a feeling of beauty, regardless if the theme painted is beautiful or not. That I find indispensable. That is what makes if something is going to be a work of art or a very well painted picture.»
