Some people have the idea that a swamp is something like a murky, dark, ominous and disturbing place. Nothing is further from the vision featured by the beautiful photographs of Karen Glaser. A collection of underwater images, unretouched, without artificial lighting, full of life, light and color.

Karen Glaser

Karen Glaser is an American photographer born in Pittsburgh. She got her BFA in the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, MO and a Master in the Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.
«In 1983, I was given a Minolta Weathermatic for my birthday and it changed my life. What was it that fascinated me about the pictures made with this little yellow, instamatic, waterproof camera that has inspired me to photograph in and around water for 25 years? First, I shot black and white pictures underwater of children at play in pools, enlarging them to 20x24 inch prints. In those pictures I saw something unfamiliar and exciting. My perception changed and I discovered a newly transformed world of possibilities. The nature of water is infinite and in a constant state of flux. It struck me that through those pictures I captured fleeting moments of perfect harmony that were as temporal as the life of a bubble.»

Springs and Swamps
«These photographs were made in a geographical location that is both seductive and sickening. This place is Florida, home to some of the most unique and breathtaking ecosystems in the world. But it is no secret that Florida is a victim of its own allure. Along with these remarkable environments, it is screaming with out of control development. I am not interested in making pictures of what created this mayhem; it’s all over the media. The New Yorker in April 2009 had an article about what happens in communities near the Everglades when non-native species invade. In July 2009 the national nightly news had a story about a 14-foot python eating a 6-foot alligator. We all know what post Disney strip malls, towering condominiums and McMansions look like. I want to show what you haven’t seen.»

"Besugo destacado / Bream in the Highlights", 2006
Impresión pigmentada sobre papel Hahnemühle / Pigment Print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag, 37" x 25"

«The first series (Springs) was shot in the pristine freshwater rivers and springs of north and central Florida. This exploration and the resulting photographs inspired a trek to the southern part of the state where the most magnificent primordial swamps are located in Big Cypress National Preserve and its neighbor, Everglades National Park. Parts of the park and preserve are a mere forty-five minutes from the sprawl of Miami to the east and Naples to the west, much of these areas are wild and untouched.»

Springs and Swamps
«The exquisite natural light that graces the springs and swamps is used solely to illuminate my pictures. In open water there is ever-present particulate matter. This layering of mud and muck, although it may appear to interfere with the water’s clarity, is in fact its lifeblood: the living, and breathing, matter seasons the soup and reflects, refracts and bends the light to create its complexity. There is no attempt by me to slick up the environments or for that matter, the pictures. These places are powerful and visceral and to show the essence of these remarkable areas, the photographs are as layered and rich as are the environments. And sometimes, therefore the pictures are unapologetically messy, messy at its most appealing.»

Hillsborough River
«For me, the tie that binds all in this most diverse state is water. And my obsession has been Florida’s freshwaters, its springs, rivers, and swamps. The Hillsborough River Project allowed me to veer off the familiar route and key in on a specific river. The story of this particular river speaks volumes about Tampa, one of Florida’s most vibrant cities.
The Hillsborough begins at the still wild Green Swamp. Like so many other natural areas in Florida, it is a relatively short drive from the city. Not only is this area the headwaters of the Hillsborough, it is also the headwaters of the Withlacoochee, Peace and Ocklawaha rivers.
For a visual artist, the paradoxical scenery—as I traveled through time both culturally and naturally from the swamp through the city—was irresistibly compelling. I allowed the work to bend and flow, in whatever direction the experience took me all the while creating work that reflects the life and character of Tampa in a very special way.»
