On June 16 is the birthday of

Irving Penn, portrait painter and photographer of American fashions born in 1917 in New York and died in 2001.
I refer to the previous posts for more images and information.

On June 17 is the birthday of

Carl Van Vechten, American writer and artistic photographer born in 1880, who was a patron of the Harlem Renaissance and the literary executor of Gertrude Stein.
He graduated from Washington High School in 1898, and later the University of Chicago in 1903. In 1906, he moved to New York City. He was hired as the assistant music critic at The New York Times. His interest in opera had him take a leave of absence from the paper in 1907, to travel to Europe to explore opera.
Van Vechten initially met Gertrude Stein in Paris in 1913. They continued corresponding for the remainder of Stein's life, and at her death she appointed Van Vechten her literary executor; he helped to bring into print her unpublished writings.
Van Vechten was interested in black writers and artists, and knew and promoted many of the major figures of the Harlem Renaissance. In the 1930s, Van Vechten began taking portrait photographs. Among the many individuals he photographed were Salvador Dalí, Gertrude Stein, Marc Chagall, Gore Vidal, Sidney Lumet, Marlon Brando and Truman Capote. He died in 1964.

On June 18 is the birthday of

Jean-Louis Tornato, French photographer born in 1969. Studied Fine Arts at the University of Aix-en-Provence until 1993, after which he became a master of art sciences research with studies in ENSP, 1996.
His work was divided between artistic research, freelance photography (on architecture, film, portrait, ...) and a theoretical commitment on the image (teaching in art school: since 2001 teaches photography and contemporary art in the Atelier de Sèvres, conferences and workshops, ...).
Since 1996, Jean-Louis Tornato has been developing his work around the fact of sleeping, working with a timer camera, infrared film and flash. This allows the night shot with a light that is invisible for the naked eye, while subjects sleep a restful sleep.
He addresses the issues of sleep, the unconscious and desire in relation to worlds in crisis, marked by several tragedies, wars, disasters and pollution.

On June 19 is the birthday of

Volker Hinz, German photographer born in 1947. Early in his career he became known for his political reportage and travel stories; now his portraits of artists, authors, fashion designers, sports men and politicians are better known.
Even as a 20-year-old, he sold his first photos to newspapers. At the age of 24 he became head of the photo agency "Sven Simon" in Bonn – at that time the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1974 he became a member of the crew of staff photographers of the weekly magazine Stern in Hamburg. In 1978 he moved as a freelance photographer to Los Angeles until be became a staffer again for “Stern” magazine in New York. There many of his great stories, portraits and reportages made him known world wide. Since 1986, back in Hamburg again, he works out of his home town.

Today, June 22, is the birthday of

Albert Renger-Patzsch, German photographer associated with the New Objectivity born in Würzburg, 1897.
He began making photographs by age twelve. After military service in the First World War he studied chemistry at Dresden Technical College. In the early 1920s he worked as a press photographer for the Chicago Tribune before becoming a freelancer and, in 1925, publishing a book, The choir stalls of Cappenberg. He had his first museum exhibition in 1927.
