Excellent mixed media artworks by Michael Reedy. The artist compose a sort of collages in which figures of purest realism coexist with faithful depictions of anatomical sections, on backgrounds populated by the most diverse creatures, ranging from little angels and insects to comic characters. Absolutely creative and enjoyable work.

"Vamos / Let's go", técnica mixta sobre papel, mixed media on paper, 46" x 32"

"Sin título / Untitled", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 26" x 45"

"Sin título (Kelsey y Jason) / Untitiled (Kelsey and Jason)"
Técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 31" x 42"

"expulsión / expulsion (e.)", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 42" x 42"

"No te preocupes, nena / Don't worry baby", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 43" x 33"

Serie Anatomía / Anatomy Series
"Por 35 / by 35", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 41" x 27"

"Nadie dañe a la niña / Nobody hurt the baby", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 33" x 45"

"Podría durar por siempre / It would last forever"
Técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 33" x 43"

"The Fall (man)", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 24" x 50"

"Cluster 1", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 25" x 66"

Michael Reedy received his MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University in 2000 and his BA from Borth Central College in 1996. His work has been included in over 100 national and international exhibitions. He has just turned 40.
Currently he is an Associate Professor in Drawing at Eastern Michigan University and is obsessed with collecting old anatomical prints, books and models. He spends the majority of his free time reading, sketching and experimenting with new media.

"Srta. Robinson (púrpura) / Ms. Robinson (purple)"
Técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 32 1/2" x 45 1/2"

«In my most recent drawings I have revisited the timeless themes of life, death, and the human condition. This new interest in the expulsion and the fall of man has been paired with my prior leanings, which have long been rooted in fringe images of the body, medical illustration, ornamentation, dark comedy, and the uncanny. These inevitable aspects of existence bring to mind the most tragic, and most beautiful, images of the body. Where the soft skin of a newborn and my rough patches of psoriasis are the most proximate of neighbors. It is this transitional moment, full of both grace and pain, which I wish to prod and indulge.»

"Cada último / Every last one", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 43" x 31"

Serie Anatomía / Anatomy Series
"69, posiblemente 80 / 69, possibly 80", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 25" x 37"

About his anatomical series, Michael wrote:
«It was the initial series that introduced both cartooning and medical illustration into my studio practice in order to explore what I believe to be the varying degrees of comprehension associated with each image type. Through this process, these two sub-sets of body images began to represent the visual bookends of the individuals I was portraying in my work. Each image is based on a series of five questions I ask the models during the initial sitting (ranging from favorite color to predicted cause of death). It is a series I hope to continue with each new person who sits for one of my works.»

"Blash", técnica mixta sobre papel, mixed media on paper, 29 1/2" x 42"

"The Fall (child)", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 27" x 52"

«The skull halo found in The Fall (child) is my first attempt at utilizing anamorphosis - the distorted perspective that requires the viewer to occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image. When viewed head-on, the skulls in the “skull halo” read like in the previous image. However, when viewed from the side the skulls along the outer most part of the ring begin to collapse and the true “skulls” emerge.»

"La caída (niño) / The Fall (child)", detalle, vista de lado / detail, side view

"Mujer / Woman", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 28" x 38"

About his "brown works":
«... my hope was to create images that compel the viewer to slip back in thought to a moment of quiet and unrest. I believe that it required the work to be elusive yet exacting in consequence – therefore, capable of suggesting a visual paradox of harmony and disarray, of calm and chaotic, of beauty and sadness.»

"Malum A", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 30" x 40"

"Mira algunos / See some", técnica mixta sobre papel / mixed media on paper, 24" x 43"

Text from "Élémentaire Zine", a bi-monthly, digital art magazine featuring this Michael's work in the Edition #6.

«The image featured is a sample from Reedy's most recent work, which explores the themes of life, death and the human condition. This renewed curiosity of the physical limits of the body, and its ultimate failing, has been paired with prior interests long rooted in the depiction of the body, that fall outside the canon of art history, such as medical imaging and cartooning. Here, the ongoing references to anatomical illustration, (and its benign approach to depicting pain and death) serves to underscore the comedic tragedy of physical existence that increasingly defines our sense of self as we age.»
