Sashie Masakatsu [Pintura]

Sashie Masakatsu

"Ciego / Blind", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 162 x 194 cm.

"Seta venenosa / Toadstool", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 116,7 x 91 cm.

"Estufa / Stove", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 162 ×194 cm., 2011

"Moralismo / Moralism", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 53,0 × 65,2 cm., 2012

"Globo territorial / Territorial Globe"
resina, laca, esmalte, acrílico, latón, cobre y acero inoxidable /
resin, lacquer, enamel, acrylic, brass, copper and stainless steel, 42 x 75 x 4 cm.

"刻の功", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 162 ×130,3 cm., 2005

"Desfile / Parade", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 162 x 194 cm.

El otro lado de la Luna / The Other Side of the Moon"

Trampa de luz / Light Trap", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 116,7 × 91,0 cm., 2012

Sashie Masakatsu is a Japanese artist born in 1974 in Kanazawa, a Japan a city where he currently lives and works, well known for rich traditional arts and crafts and a unique culture due to the city's difficult geographical accessibility. Sashie received his MFA from the Kanazaw College of Art in 2000. Sashie has exhibited throughout Asia and the United States and his work is included in private and corporate collections internationally.

"Bazar / Bazaar", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 130,3 ×194 cm., 2010

"Coacervación / Coacervation", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 91 x 72,2 cm.

The best known of Sashie's paintings represent immense spheres floating on wreckage of civilization. These spehres are composed of the most varied elements: houses, neon signs, appliances ...
«... the fundamental theme of my work is a "world" that functions by the phenomenon seen in the balanced aquarium. It is a limited space within which the circle of life exists. The size of the world to an individual varies depending on his imagination and determination. How would one view the world if his living space were physically limited, maybe in a container, for example, an aquarium?
Every life form, within its designated space, occupies a smaller territory. Within it, egoism and indifference toward the environment are repeated daily. Yet, it is also full of everyday tranquility and happiness. These two factors express a world, which is somewhat unstable but retains a comfortable balance.
In my work, the symbolic shape of a world, a container, or a territory is the sphere of the earth, which is made up of drawings of buildings. The theory has been influential to me in terms of drawing such limited and closed worlds.»

"Nido / Nest", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 116,7 x 91 cm.

Verbena / Jamboree", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 116,7 x 116,7 cm., 2011

As the artist told, most of that images are modeled after the town he grew up in. About the absence of human beings, even when most of the elements are man-made obects, Sashie said: «I feel that human figures in a work of art automatically determine the time, the space, and the world. Even worse, they may determine the way the viewers view the work. I do not wish to do so. My aim is to have the viewer imagine human beings from artificial objects, and to be aware of nature for the lack of it.

"El mundo en el bolsillo / World in the Pocket", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 162 x 162 cm., 2003

"Fiebre / Fever", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 112,2 x 168,2 cm.

The contrast between the detail and complexity of the orb and the surrounding environment impresses upon the viewer the co-existence of small microcosms within the larger outer world. Without showing preference to either world, Masakatsu Sashie paints two opposite worlds as equals with the intent of drawing the viewer into the space and having them reflect on society and its values.

Seta / Mushroom", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 33,3 × 24,2 cm., 2009

"Luna / Moon", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 194 × 259 cm., 2009

«Japan has a history of constantly changing itself and its values upon receiving foreign influence. Japanese have unique adaptability, and often are receptive to change. I feel that the trend is another example of Japanese adaptability, and view these changes as interesting. Of course, what needs to be preserved should be preserved, and we must all learn to discriminate.»

"Cuna / Cradle", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 53 × 65,2 cm., 2007
