Kris Lewis [Pintura]

Interesting work of Kris Lewis. A unique style in his portraits, mostly young women watching directly at the viewer with enigmatic, sad, ambiguous or absent eyes. Stylized figures and often winter landscapes; compositions with more questions than answers.

Kris Lewis

"Venus centelleantes / Scintillating Venuses", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 24" x 23"

"Sprung", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 40" x 30"

"Adriel", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 36" x 24"

"La visita / The Visit"

"Cory", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 30" x 24"

"Torre de fuego / Fire Tower", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 16" x 12"

«Recuerdo a ambos, mi padre y mi madre, enseñándome a dibujar.

"Marea baja / Low Tide", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 36" x 24"

"Suave / Soft", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 16" x 12"

Kris Lewis, b. 1978, Ocean County, NJ, is a Los Angeles-based artist whose influences include Alfonse Bougereau, Andrew Wyeth, Hans Holbein, Albrecht Durer, Hieronymus Bosch, Gustav Klimt, and Jules-Bastien LePage. His reverence for masters of old is apparent in his depiction of the human figure, which he uses as a vector for hidden stories, delicate emotion, and finding truth. His affinity for people-watching also informs his paintings, collecting glances, gestures, miens and hints and channeling them through the canvas for the viewer to share in the experience.

"Desarraigo / Uprooting", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 30" x 30"

"Estudio de mano / Hand Study", grafito sobre papel / graphite on paper, 18" x 24", 2007

Kris studied illustration at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His paintings have been featured in galleries and museums in cities around the world; including L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Denver, Miami, London, Rome and Hong Kong. His work has also been seen in the publications Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, Modern Painters, and American Art Collector.

"Cañón del rey / King’s Canyon", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 20" x 16"

"Pluma en tu sombrero / Feather in Your Cap", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 32" x 32"

«As I begin a painting the subject physically, emotionally and spiritually reveals itself to me. Each brush stroke speaks to the subsequent stroke, carrying out a dialog, linking my subject and me as if we were meeting for the first time. I find this uncertainty exciting and embrace the indecisive nature of my work.»

«I remember my father and my sister both teaching me how to draw. I must have been around four years old when I first remember my “stick figures” being slightly different than those of other children my age. I had a pretty good understanding of the contour shape of the figure and form.»

"Rosa zafiro / Rose Zephyr", óleo sobre tabla / oil on wood, 20" x 16"

«I choose my models based on the feel of the piece I’m working on. The sketches and drawings I create before before beginning the actual painting dictate the model choice.»

«I do intend to “leave it open” for my audience to interpret the emotions of a piecethemselves. The way I portray a subject is based on my own feelings and personal experiences, and I don’t expect or intentionally try to bring the viewer into that same experience but one oftheir own.»

"Nieve de Kurzeme / Kurzeme Snow", óleo sobre panel / oil on board, 24" x 20"
