Nido de Urraca / Magpie's Nest (I)

Nueva serie / New Series

In his art, Puggioni experiments with the material character of surfaces by combining classical figure drawing with a more modern antagonist mood. His works are meticulously constructed and consist of various reactive materials – enamel, ink, acetic acid and oil on aluminum and copper. Where the layers of material constitute a surface on the ‘skin’ of the work, a process of peeling, decay and movement appears. The paint is forced to function as the surface of the canvas as well as the living ‘skin’ of the portrayed bodies. Info from here.

Liu Xue

Liu Xue

A man merges with a pig (a kind of obese centaur), a woman with a chicken, another man with a dog, and so on. The results are something we never saw before.
The unnatural combination of Xue’s work explores the notion of what’s considered attractive or glamourous.
Pieces are grouped in a series entitled by the artist "We are the World".

El beso de la muerte / The Kiss of Death

Foto / Photo: Wikimedia Commons.

"Mes son cor jovenívol no pot més;

("Mas su joven corazón no puede más;

This work known as "The Kiss or The Angel of Death" is attributed to Jaume Barba (according to the municipal registration) and was created in 1930, although it is presumed that the author was actually Joan Fontbernat Paituví, husband of the daughter of Joan. Located in Poble Nou Cementiri - Poblenou Cemetery -, Barcelona, Spain, is arguably the jewel of the place. It is said that may have inspired Bergman for his film "The Seventh Seal".

By 1930 the Llaudet family lost a son still young, and wanted to make a sculpture for his tomb that represented the following verses by Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer written in the epitaph:

"But his young heart can't stand no more;
in his veins the blood stops and freezes
and lost encouragement embraces with faith
feeling the kiss of death falling"

The request was made to the marble sculptures workshop of Jaume Barba (J.Barba), who always has been considered the creator of this beautiful sculpture, leader in many funerary art exhibitions. But since the teacher had around 70 years old when made, it seems more plausible version that the work was conceived by Joan Fontbernat, son in law of the owner and the most qualified in the shop, while the back of the ribs, made with shocking realism, is also attributed to Artemi Barba.

«I like to seek and capture shapes, light and colour, since these are, in my opinion, three of four main aspects that allow us to sense all things around us in their beauty. Therefore, I equally like drawing on paper, taking pictures and post-processing images in a computer. »
