"Retrato masculino / Male Portrait", acuarela, lápiz / watercolor, pencil, 26,2 x 21,7 cm., 1898

After the death of his wife in 1908, Karl left the oil painting and turned to graphic arts. From this period are most of his lithographs, portraits generally. After his death in Dresden in 1945, the painter was virtually forgotten until a group exhibition of works by him and his wife in 1986, at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Thereafter he awoke an interest by private collectors through which his works came to trade at very high prices.

"Retrato de una dama / Portrait of a Lady", litografía / lithography, 40,5 x 32 cm., 1906

"In the 'Hagenbund' we also came to know the Dresden couple, Karl  Mediz (born in 1868) and Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (born in 1862).  They followed an almost identical path of expression and development, which led them to Dachau, to Uhde and to the Belgian fishing  village of Knokke some of the head-quarters of impressionist students.  Both husband and wife have a picturesquely fantastic vision of things, which, in their representation of ice-clad mountains, becomes quite  stylise ; and in contrast to a background of panoramic character, the  foreground is depicted with almost microscopic accuracy. Thus Karl  Mediz paints every thread, every hair in his life-size Eismanner, which  made his reputation and now hangs in the Modern Gallery ; and  in the same way Emilie Mediz-Pelikanin, her slender little trees  in tubs, which she generally likes to place on some terrace on a  Southern sea, depicts even the tiniest crack in the bark. They have  both painted much in these Southern seas chiefly about Corfu and  have studied the blue deep with a bird's-eye view as it were. Karl  Mediz is also a master of portraiture. He has done quite a series of  portraits of persons in Dresden society, all executed with minutest  precision."

Glicinas, cipreses y álamos / Wysteria, Cypress and Poplar Trees

Karl Mediz
Glyzinienbrunnen vor Zypressen / Fuente de glicinas con cipreses / Wysteria Fountain and Cypress Trees"
Óleo sobre lino / oil on linen, 156,8 by 170,8 cm., 1900

Glyzinienbrunnen vor Zypressen, painted in 1900, is a monumental work undoubtedly influenced by Gustav Klimt's celebrated landscapes and the Viennese Secessionists at the turn of the century. Karl Mediz (1868-1944) was born in Vienna and studied as well as in Vienna, in Munich and in Paris, where he enrolled at the famous Académie Julian. When he exhibited his first large-scale painting at the Kunstausstellung in 1899, the audience compared his work even to Giotto's frescos. Soon after, the artist achieved his breakthrough in 1903, when the 'Untere Belvedere' in Vienna, at the time housing contemporary art, even acquired two of the painter's key works. The almost dreamy landscape depicts a created paradise inspired by the beautiful surrounding in Corfu, where the painter spent some of his most prolific time. The artist also participated in landmark exhibitions like the international Kunstausstellung in Dresden and the collective exhibition in 1902 at the Hagenbund in Vienna.

Emilie Mediz-Pelikan
"Fuente de glicinas con álamos / Wysteria Fountain And Poplar Trees"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 160 x 148 cm., 1900

The information was taken from this Sotheby's webpage where you can read that this painting was owned by Sir Sean Connery. Looking for Emilie's paintings, I found this work, also from 1900, where the cypresses have been replaced by poplars. The dimensions are also similar. It's hard to say which one is nicer ...
